Despite having a short bench, the Raiders still managed to hold off the fifth-place Cougars as captain Evan Zych fired home a loose puck from the slot for the go-ahead marker midway through the final period. Goaltender Marc Stuart made 30 stops in total. At home on Saturday, the Derbys took a 2-0 lead by the mid-point of the opening frame before the Raiders found their stride, led by two more goals from first-star Seymour. Zych, Peter Mrksic, Kyle Essery and Fred Gervasi added single goals in front of 475 spectators and Paul Claxton post- ed the win in goal. Freeman used his final player card to sign local resident Ryan Torres this past week to add some depth to the defence corps. The 20-year-old Torres, at 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds, played 16 games with the Raiders last year before finishing out the season with the Guelph Jr. B Dominators. The West Divisions first-round combatants have been set as third-place Hamilton will face a Milton squad that has just replaced its bench boss, Randy Novak, who was recently named the conferences coach of the year. Brampton takes on Burlington in the other series. The Raiders do know that theyll host their first playoff game on Saturday, Feb. 23. Playoff action in Halton high school girls vol- leyball and boys basketball tipped off this week and organizers are hoping that weather doesnt play a factor in the scheduling again. Last weeks snowstorms played havoc with the final regular-season games and at our press time Tuesday some opening-round girls volleyball matches were in jeopardy of being postponed. In hoops action on Monday afternoon, Georgetowns senior boys defeated Burlingtons M.M. Robinson 45-32 in the playoff opener at GDHS and will now face St. Thomas Aquinas today (Wednesday) in the next round. Christ the Kings seniors were eliminated after a 58-49 loss to host Notre Dame Monday, while Georgetowns juniors were trounced 73-39 at Nelson. The senior Rebels also traveled to Indiana ear- lier this month for their annual meeting with Mishawaka Varsity in a mini-tournament. GDHS won its opening game 48-45 over New Richmond, Ohio, then lost 54-34 to the host side in front of approximately 1,000 spectators. Millar Galbraith led the Rebels with nine points. Meanwhile, the Acton senior Bearcats have enjoyed their finest season yet, a 6-4 record that included three one-point defeats. Theyll host winless White Oaks Friday in the opening round of playoffs beginning at 3:30 p.m. The Cats beat the same Oakville school 54-31 last week in their regular-season finale, led by T.J. Frys 10 points and 17 assists. In girls volleyball, the GDHS junior and senior teams will host playoff games on Thursday after- noon after receiving byes for finishing first in their division. The 7-1 seniors lost their final regular season match against Notre Dame while the juniors steamrolled through their opponents, posting a 9- 0 mark. Actons senior Bearcats, also 7-1 on the year, will host an undetermined opponent Thursday at 3:30 p.m. Raiders open playoffs Feb. 23 Continued from pg.16 Storms play havoc with high school playoffs
