The two new family doctors in town are Dr. Yasmeen Jabbar and Dr. Seema Chowdry. Both have recently joined the Halton Hills Family Health Team and are seeing new patients. Jabbar has taken over Dr. Gabriel Tings practice at Georgetown Medical Associates. Her office is located at 1A Princess Anne Dr., Georgetown (near the hospital). Jabbar practiced family medicine in Pakistan for seven years before coming to Canada in 2002. She originally moved to Toronto and worked in a doctors office there as an observer before she completed her two-year residency program at the University of Western Ontario. Following her graduation she prac- ticed for a year in Cambridge before deciding to come to Georgetown, in part because this area is closer to her family and friends. She plans to move to Georgetown shortly. She is currently working part-time, but will be full-time beginning in March. Jabbar, whose grandfather was a doctor, said she has wanted to be a doctor since she was very young. As a child she loved to try on her grandfathers white coat and would give her dolls injections. I enjoy medicine, said Jabbar. Its a passion for me. And she is happy with her choice of Georgetown for her practice. Im loving it. The patients are very nice. Theyre lovely people, said Jabbar who added she will have hospital privileges at Georgetown Hospital when shes full- time. Before coming to Canada, Jabbar was doing her residency in obstetrics and gynecology and she has a particu- lar interest in womens health issues, and also in geriatrics, dermatology and psychiatry. She enjoys the versatility of being a family doctor because it allows her to see patients with a wide variety of issues. Chowdry began working in Georgetown Jan. 1 She is working with Dr. Judy Ming at 99 Sinclair Ave. Suite 200. Chowdry trained as a family doctor in India then prac- ticed for more than six years in Bahrain before moving to Canada. While there she received her diploma in aviation medi- cine and worked as the doctor for pilots and crew of Gulf Air. She and her husband, who have two children, decided to move to Canada three years ago. She did her training in family medicine at University of Toronto and after a visit to Georgetown, she decided to set up her practice here and originally trained with Dr. Jeff Sutherland. Overall I found the people very friendly, not difficult to deal with, said Chowdry, who adds shes enjoying working here. She has noticed both similarities and differences practic- ing here and in Bahrain. Here she said a doctors practice is more research based, often accessing evidence gleaned from research papers, which is then applied directly to practising with her patients. In Bahrain, she said the doctoring was more text-book based. But she said the hospitals in Bahrain are very similar to Canadian hospitals because they are run there to American and Canadian standards. Chowdry is hoping to offer a half-day clinic each week for diabetic patients because she has a special interest in that area. She is currently seeing patients Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Friday. She has applied for hospital privileges and will be doing some shifts in Georgetown Hospitals emergency department beginning next month. Appointments with Dr. Jabbar can be booked by calling her office at 905-873-3000 and Dr. Chowdry at 905-873- 1383. Town welcomes two new doctors LISA TALLYN Staff Writer DR. YASMEEN JABBAR DR.
