With the launch of the H.O.P.P.ing service (Hot Off the Press Publications), library users can sign up to get a list of new items in popu- lar subject areas, without ever leaving the house. All that is needed is a trusty computer and Internet access. This automated notifica- tion service-known as an RSS feed, which stands for Really Simply Syndication, offers library users a conve- nient way to track the latest acquisitions in subjects such as: business, gardening, travel, cookery, health, green living, parenting and interior design. There is also a list of new DVD arrivals for film buffs. To subscribe, all you need to do is choose the HOPPing tab found on the Librarys catalogue at: www.library.hhpl.on.ca. These subject lists, which are updated regularly, are also available for viewing. Geoff Cannon, manager of Library Public Services sees this as an exciting and easy to use service that lets you know through your news feeder, what new items have arrived in your area of interest. This service sends infor- mation to your computer rather than you hav- ing to repeat the same subject search over and over again to check on the newest arrivals. And, in one additional step, you can place holds on any items received through this ser- vice. For more information about this service contact Cannon, 905-873-2681 ext. 2513. Meanwhile, statistics show that registration in childrens programs such as Baby Tales, Tales for Twos and Sleepytime Stories at Halton Hills Public Library, has increased by 47.6% in the last five years. Both branches of the Halton Hills Public Library offer a variety of free literacy-building programs for babies and school-aged children. Douglas Davey, the Childrens and Youth Advocate, attributes this doubling in attendance to outstanding staff, high quality programs and a supportive community that have come together to take the library to a new level of service. We have added more programs (over 80 more than five years ago) and offered programs that meet expressed needs. You spoke, we listened, and the results speak for them- selves! This increase, along with increases in the number of items bor- rowed (41.4%), the number of questions asked (27.6%) and the number of people using the librarys computer workstations (7.8%), are due to the many service improvements. These include more current titles and formats, better technology such as wireless access, a relaxing of rules, and a more welcoming environment for all ages. Library cards are free to anyone who lives, works, attends school or pays local property taxes in Halton Hills. If you havent been to the Halton Hills Public Library lately, drop by to see the changes. Library launches H.O.P.P.ing service
