WEDNESDAY... A group of four Grade 7 Silver Creek Public School students in Georgetown South were declared winners of a video contest sponsored by the World Book Encyclopedia in which they were asked to rate the credi- bility of websites. Their submission entitled Is It Real? was among about 200 elementary school entries received by World Book in November and Silver Creek was judged to have made it into the top six at the contest deadline, along with four American schools and another from the Netherlands. I think its pretty cool that were the only one in Canada who made it, said team member Kristian Pancevski, whose project partners were Monique Tuin, Diana Pesce and Dylan Martin. Then this week the students were notified that they were judged in an on-line poll to have composed the best two-minute video in the K-8 division for the contest, earning a video iPod to share between them. Catherine Rivera, a support teacher at Silver Creek who oversees the enrichment program that includes the four students, pre- sented them with the challenge in September as part of their once-weekly sessions. We decided that the contest would make for a good fall project and then the students basically took it on themselves, with a script, timeline and deadline to follow, said Rivera, who along with Silver Creek teacher-librari- an Lori Tsotsos, provided the group with some direction and support. Sometimes with gifted children its diffi- cult for them to mesh in a team environment but these students really get along and work together well. The fast-paced video was required to highlight the ABCs (A-authoritative, B- biased, C-current) of websites and the stu- dents took on character roles to make their points.
