Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, February 20, 2008 15 Playoffs are in full swing for girls volley- ball, boys basketball and hockey this week as the Halton Secondary School Athletic Associations winter schedule winds down. The Halton regional finals for girls volley- ball will take place Thursday at Sheridan College in Oakville and Halton Hills is guar- anteed to have one team represented because the Georgetown Rebels hosted the Acton Bearcats yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon in one of the semifinal matches. Both teams finished the regular season at 7-1, with the Rebels earning first place and home-court honours for winning the head- to-head matchup between the two. The Bearcats, who have already earned a berth in the Golden Horseshoe A qualifier for the Ontario Federat ion of Schools Athlet ic Associat ion tournament next Tuesday, defeated St. Thomas Aquinas 25- 11, 25-18 in their playoff opener last week, while Georgetown swept aside Oakvilles White Oaks. Oakville-Trafalgar faced Assumption of Burlington in the other senior semifinal yes- terday. In junior action, Georgetown completed its regular season at 9-0 but actually finished as the second seed in its division because Assumption didnt lose a set all year, mean- ing that the Rebels had to travel to St . Thomas Aquinas yesterday for their semifinal match, hoping to earn a berth in Thursdays Halton championship at Sheridan College. Basketball The 7-4 Acton senior Bearcats thumped visiting White Oaks 58-26 in their playoff opener last Thursday, setting up a final-four showdown with 8-3 Milton District, which was held yesterday. Despite losing seven-foot centre Adam Grove, who moved on to Sheridan College this semester, the senior Bearcats received a 10-point, 17-assist effort from T.J. Fry in dis- mantling White Oaks. Victor Thompson added 10 points and Josh Essiembre seven more. The Halton f inals are set for today (Wednesday) at Sheridan College. Georgetowns seniors were eliminated by St. Thomas Aquinas last week 47-41 in their second-round playoff encounter, despite 17 points from Millar Galbraith. The Rebels were within three points in the final minute but their opponents clinched the game on free throws. Hockey Boys post-season play got under way yes- terday, with Georgetown hosting Aldershot and Christ the King facing Burl ington Central in the round of 16. Winners of those games move on to the two-game quarterfinal series, which begin Thursday. On the girls side, Christ the King placed fourth in the Division I standings and will host Loyola today (Wednesday) in the quar- terfinals. Actons Bearcats were edged 5-4 by Iroquois Ridge 5-4 last Thursday and are still trying to clinch a berths in next weeks Division II playoff draw. Jenn Essiembre (2), Kaitlin Chadwick and Lauren Vermeulen had the Acton goals. Georgetowns 3-4-2 Rebels needed a win or a draw against 6-2-1 T.A. Blakelock yes- terday in the regular-season finale in order to lock up a playoff spot in Division I. High school roundup Playoffs dominate weeks action
