Congratulations to the Georgetown Rebels Swim Team Rebel swimmers settle for silver at OFSAA Falling just short of winning the overall team title, the Georgetown Rebels still had many individual and relay high- lights at this weeks Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations swim champi- onships at the Etobicoke Olympium. The Rebels convened the event for the second year in a row and after qualifying 31 ath- letes for the two-day meet, which drew some 1,400 swimmers from around the province, they threat- ened to prevail over powerhouse Riverside of Windsor as the over- all team champion. But a couple of disqualifica- tions to GDHS swimmers in junior girls relay races on Tuesday negated points toward the team total that left the Rebels settling for second place, although the boys were first in their category. Riverside, also nicknamed the Rebels, had 1,662 points to Georgetowns 1,494. What can you do. We were all trying to swim our best to make up for the Dqs and people were able to pick up points when they werent expected to do so, but things like that happen in swimming, said 17-year-old Gresham Kimm, who earned a gold medal in his final high school race, the senior boys 100m backstroke, just after older sister MacKenzie scooped up a bronze in the same discipline. It was nice personally to go out on a high like that and the last couple of days have been just incredible. Senior Ricky Davids capped his splendid OFSAA career with three gold medals, nosing out teammate Gareth Viray-Cox in the 50m freestyle and then tak- ing the 50m butterfly race by over a second. He anchored the GDHS 200m freestyle relay victo- ry on Wednesday, rounded out by strong legs from Rob Stuart, Viray-Cox and Kyle Hansen. Tuesday afternoons finals provided a medal flurry for the Rebels, as juniors Jen Ormiston and Chris Bellman raced to gold medals in their 50m breaststroke events. Grade 9 prodigy Tasha Truscott broke her own standing Canadian record for her age group by winning the open girls 100m butterfly in a time of 1:00.40 and missed another medal by just three-hundredths of a second in Wednesdays 100m backstroke. While Truscott has competed at international meets and Canadian championships, she said her first trip to OFSAA was a different experience because she was in more of a team environ- ment. I knew OFSAA was a sanc- tioned meet and I surprised myself by swimming so fast, said the Canadian development team member, who smashed her previous best by seven-tenths of a second. Its just a different kind of buzz at OFSAA because everyone stands up and gets excited when your teammates are racing or when theres a close finish. Gold medals also went to the GDHS senior girls 200m medley relay quartet and the senior boys were third in the same event. Stuart also picked up a silver medal in the 200m freestyle and MacKenzie Kimm had another bronze in the 100m breaststroke, as did brother Gresham in the 100m IM. Rebel head coach Jon Newcombe added that it will be difficult to challenge for top school in Ontario next year with several team members graduating. We do gain a lot of good juniors who are moving up and you just never know, Newcome said. At the beginning of this year, we didnt know what we had, but they always seem to surprise. Grade 9 student Holden Vetro from Georgetowns Christ the King High School had the Jaguars best showing at the provincials, placing seventh in the 50m fly. Photos by Eamonn Maher Georgetowns Kaitlyn Andrews turned in her best shot put throw of the winter at the right time at the Southland Conferenee Indoor Track & Field Championships at the University of Houston recently, finishing third in the womens division. The 19-year-old Acton High School graduate recorded a put of 14.25 metres as a member of the Stephen F. Austin State University Ladyjack team, which finished first overall in the team standings.
