Do you remember SYKES BAKERY 16 Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, March 12, 2008 SENIORS LIFESTYLES Congratulations to George Chadwick who has retained his position as president of the Board of Directors of the Georgetown Seniors Centre. Members elected to the Board at the AGM are Cynthia Van Herk, Lorraine Hillier, Rein Pater, Bernie Bradner, Martha Stone, and John Daley. Martha and John will each serve a two-year term completing the terms of two resignations from the Board. Turn out at the AGM was rather poor but those present heard Gerald Rennie, from the Acton Seniors, present a report from the Strategic Planning Committee outlining some proposed plans to make preparations for the arrival of the Baby Boomers into our centres. In the very near future Seniors Centres will look, and, be quite different places than those of today. A copy of this report is available at Front Reception. We need to take a look at what is happen- ing today in our centres. Membership fees are not sufficient monies to carry the centre. Like numerous other organizations and cen- tres we must depend on fundraising to fill the gap. Unfortunately the proposed din- ner/dance, a fundraiser, had to be cancelled due to a lack of support. Along with supplementing our income, we also need to depend heavily on volun- teers. Pleas for more people to take an opportunity to volunteer for an hour or two once in awhile have fallen on deaf ears. There are spots on Reception, Security, Special Events, Fundraisers, and Kitchen duties. Please consider offering a small amount of time. The somebody else will do it theory just isnt working. As you are aware, Kristen Bradley, our co- ordinator has left on her maternity leave. Terry Forbes has been hired to take her place for the year. Please drop in and make your- self known to Terry. Lets make this her best year ever. Because my report did not make the news- paper you missed the notice about the registra- tion for the local games. The next games at the Centre are Euchre on March 26th, Cribbage on March 27th and Bid Euchre on April 7th. If you call Lorne Hammond at 905-877-8109 Im sure you can make some arrangements to register. The next luncheon at the Centre is on Thursday, March 20. You will be entertained following lunch with a short skit by the Drama Club. This is an advance notice for the mens Annual Pancake Breakfast. It is their opportu- nity to show off their culinary skills and we really need to support them. The date for the All You Can Eat Pancake Breakfast at the Centre is Saturday, April 19 from 8-11 a.m. Thanks to our grant from New Horizons, the computer have arrived and are just about ready to go. It is hoped to have two comput- er classes running by the end of March. They are still looking for instructors. It will likely be a six-week course running one day and one evening a week. Fees for the course have not been set yet. If you are interested in tak- ing a course please call 905-877-6444. Plans are under way, and, the date has been set for the Drama Clubs Annual Variety Night. Mark Thursday, June 5th on your cal- endar you wont want to miss the fun. Come on out to the Georgetown Seniors Centre. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The coffee is always on (or tea if you prefer). Take part and make new friends. See you there! Over 55 members of the Acton Seniors Recreation Centre attended the Annual General Meeting on Feb. 26. President Margaret Anderson welcomed everyone, and Mayor Rick Bonnette brought greetings from the Town. Wendy Krever, our co-ordinator thanked the mayor and council for the additional co- ordinator hours and Councillor Jon Hurst as the liaison to council for the centre. She thanked Sherry Mitchell, our administrative assistant on behalf of everyone for all her hard work over the years. (This brought a round of applause.) Sherry will be going to Georgetown full time once a replacement has been found to cover the two days she works in Acton. Wendy said she especially wanted to thank the volunteers. Without their support and hard work many of the things we accom- plish at our centre would not be possible. She quoted Martin Luther King Jr. Everybody can be great, because anybody can serve. You dont have to have a college degree to serve, you dont have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve, you dont have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve, you only need a heart full of grace and a soul generated by love. The Georgetown Seniors Centre was represented by their president George Chadwick accompanied by their board sec- retary, Florence Riehl. Margaret introduced the present board members: vice-president Mary Walsma; past president Gerald Rennie; secretary Eileen Dix; treasurer Pat Frizzell; program chair, Jane McAllister; fundraising chair, Joanne Bissonnette; travel chair, Betty Green; mem- bership chair, Jill Tetreault; social chair, Victor Bissonnette; reception chair, Pat Jones; property chair, Dobbie Frizzell; secu- rity chair, Mike Milligan and public rela- tions chair, Julie Conroy. Margaret thanked them for their cooperation and support. The minutes from the 2007 AGM meet- ing were accepted as read and Pat Frizzell asked if there were any questions on the financial report. She asked that Reg Marsh and Associates be appointed as auditors for the 2008 (as in previous years). Any mem- ber who was unable to attend the AGM and wishes a copy of the 2007 report and finan- cial report as presented at the meeting can pick one up at the front desk. Nominations committee members Gerald Rennie and Mary Walsma conducted the elec- tion of new officers and the membership voted the following people to the vacant three-year positions: secretary, Connie Fix; security, Bob Bruce; fundraising, Bev Jones and Margaret Anderson for a second-year term as president. Gerald Rennie gave an eye-opening report on the future of seniors once the baby boomers reach a more mature age. They will be looking for different ways of spending their recreational time, and we have to be ready with facilities and programs for all members. He also reminisced about the founding of the Golden Age Club in 1987 and how programs have changed over the years from cards, trips and choirs to the more active programs offered for todays society. Gerald outlined the co-executives (Georgetown and Acton) strategic plan. Anyone who would like to give feedback, please give it to the Reception Desk by March 14.
