Prospective and current members are invited to meet in the Lounge at 7:30 p.m. to learn about the next stage of the allotment garden plan and to select their plot. An allotment is a rented plot of land where individuals and families can grow their own fruits, vegeta- bles and flowers. Allotment gardening gives you the chance to come out and get your hands dirty, get back in touch with the earth, meet people in your com- munity and grow your own chemi- cal-free food, says Kim Falls, chair of the groups steering committee. Whats more, its relaxing, good exercise and great fun! The Town of Halton Hills recent- ly approved funding for the allot- ment garden project, to be located adjacent to the Old Seed House Garden. Preparation of the area is expected to take place in April and members should be gardening by Victoria Day (May 19) or sooner. The Georgetown Horticultural Society is truly appreciative of the support Town staff gave to our pro- posal to bring allotment gardening to Georgetown, says president Lil Taggart. This project came to life with the help of interested garden- ers and we look forward to the fur- ther greening of our community. Plots will measure 10 feet by 20 feet and will be leased for $50 each growing season, plus the cost of a membership with the Georgetown Horticultural Society. There are only six plots remaining for the 2008 growing season and prospec- tive members are encouraged to attend the next meeting to reserve their spot. Also at the meeting guest speaker Janet Kuzniar, owner of Urban Wilderness Landscaping in Norval, will speak to the group about organ- ic gardening and maintenance. For more information or if you are interested in a plot but you can not attend the meeting, please con- tact Lil Taggart, 416-809-9036 or georgetown@gardenontario.org. Allotment gardening interest grows
