Safety first was the message Halton Hills council sent out to local businesses interested in voluntarily participating in the upcoming Earth Hour event. The Town of Halton Hills has signed on to be part of a worldwide movement Earth Hour on Saturday, March 29, 8-9 p.m. to show its commitment to the environment and its new Green Plan. While the Town is encouraging local resi- dents, organizations and businesses to become involved, its not mandatory. This is strictly volunteer, said Mayor Rick Bonnette. Most businesses will have to keep lights on for security reasons and safety purposes. He suggested, for example, that restaurants dining rooms rely on candle- light for that hour, but obvious- ly lights will remain on in the kitchen. Really what we want to do is send out the message that this event is happening and the objective is increasing public awareness, the mayor said. Hopefully people will participate and have some fun with it. ...Its like when the lights went out in 2004, but its voluntary this time, said Wards 3&4 Regional Councillor Jane Fogal. Already at least three local participants have registered on the international website: Christ the King Secondary School, George- town Salvation Army Community Church and Circus Strategic Communications.
