Submitted photo Local gymnasts fare well Continued from pg. 21 Eight athletes from the Halton Hills Blue Fins Swim Club qualified for the Swim Ontario Junior Provincial Championship in London earlier this month and two girls came away with medals from the short-course com- petition. Fourteen-year-old Tasha Truscott, a Canadian Olympic Team prospect, claimed two gold medals at the provincial meet, in the 100m and 200m butterfly, breaking an Ontario record in the latter event. She also was runner- up in the 50m freestyle and fourth in the 100m free. Blue Fin Sophia Cieplucha earned her first- ever individual provincial medal in the 200m butterfly in a time of 2:29.44. The 13-year-old also placed fifth in the grueling 1,500m freestyle with a clocking of 18:17.37. Other Halton Hills club member results at the junior provincials included: Loren OBrien- Egesborg (age 12, 13th 100m butterfly; 26th 200m freestyle); Erica Knox (age 11, 37th 200m butterfly); Trevor Burwell (age 13, 11th 200m free; 14th 400m free, 15th 100m free). Truscott also competed at the Speedo Eastern Canadian Championships in Etobicoke, where she broke a 17-year-old record in the long course 100m butterfly. She earned a silver medal for her finish in 1:02.31 and broke the previous best time for 14-year- olds set in 1991 by Julie Howard, and now holds the Canadian records in the 100m fly for both the long and short course. The Grade 9 GDHS student earned a bronze medal in the 50m fly long course and set per- sonal bests in four of the five events she entered, including a fifth-place result in the 200m fly in which she was four seconds faster than ever before. Her next big meet is the CN Olympic Trials in Montreal beginning April 1, when shell attempt to qualify for the 2008 Summer Olympics in China in the 200m fly, 50m free, 100m free and her specialty, the 100m butter- fly. It s also an opportunity to make the Canadian team that will compete in the FINA junior world championships in Mexico in July. The names of relay team members from Georgetown District High School who won medals at last weeks OFSAA championships in Etobicoke werent included in the results pub- lished last week. The Rebels senior girls 200m medley relay team that won gold consisted of Rebekka Bond, MacKenzie Kimm, Romana Matthews and Kathryn McDonald. Three boys teams earned bronze medals- Senior medley (Gresham Kimm, Justin Bravo, Kyle Creswicke, Kyle Hansen); Junior freestyle (Chris Bellman, Alex Rogers, Cam Elgie, Drake Livingston); Junior medley (Drake Livingston, Jason St. Jacques, Alex Marschall, Alex Rogers).
