10 Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, March 19, 2008 Halton Region is backing a provincial private members bill that proposes a ban on smoking in cars carrying children. Regional council passed a motion recently that calls on Chairman Gary Carr to write to the premier endors- ing Bill 11, the proposed amendment to the Smoke-Free Ontario Act that would put the kibosh on smoking in vehicles with kids under 16. Premier Dalton McGuinty recent- ly said he would take a second look at enacting such legislation. The council resolution also directed staff to continue working on a proposed regional bylaw that would prohibit smoking within nine metres of an entrance to a public facility. The Region has already adopted the nine-metre rule for all of its buildings. A staff report with recommenda- tions on the bylaw issue will be brought back to council in the spring.
