Whether physical or emotional, abuse attacks a childs self-esteem and emotional development, leaving long-term emotional trauma and pain. You can help prevent child abuse by being a nurturing parent or caregiver. By letting children know they are special, competent and loved, you can help them develop positive self-images and happier futures. If you feel overwhelmed, angry or frustrated as a parent, help is out there for you. Look in your area for support groups and services, or talk to a trusted friend, family member, pastor or doctor about what you can do to protect and support your child. If we all do our part to prevent child abuse, well get to the heart of the matter. The Region is helping those with special needs and disabilities prepare for emergen- cies and their consequences. The municipality officially unveiled its new emergency preparedness public educa- t ion resources Tuesday. The materials include a topic-focused pamphlet series, an audio CD on emergency preparedness and a closed-captioned personal emergency pre- paredness DVD. Everyone needs a plan, said Regional Chair Gary Carr. People with special needs should talk about their individual require- ments with family, friends and caregivers. We hope these resources will be helpful as they discuss emergency preparedness plans with the people in their support network. The pamphlet series addresses physical, visual, auditory and non-visible disabilities, as well as special needs considerations for seniors, travelers and people living or work- ing in high-rise buildings. Tips include how others can best assist a person with a disabili- ty and additional suggested survival kit items. The materials were prepared by the Community Management Coordinators Committee, which includes representation from the Region, City of Burlington, towns of Halton Hills, Milton and Oakville and the Halton Regional Police Service. The Canadian Red Cross was on hand to help launch the resources Tuesday. Karen Charles, the Red Cross regional manager for disaster management, commended the Region for taking on the initiative, noting the materials are all of great value. The seven pamphlets are also available in audio format while the pamphlet focusing on vision can be obtained in Braille. These materials supplement the informa- t ion found in the Regions Personal Emergency Preparedness Guide available at www.halton.ca or by calling 905-825-6000. The school, located on Danby Rd., is slat- ed to open this December. Entry forms and suggestion boxes will be placed in all Halton Hills elementary school s and public libraries. Suggested names may be submitted until Friday, March 28, Entries can also be submitted at the school board website www.hdsb.ca , faxed to 905-335-4447, or mailed to the Communications Department, Halton District School Board, 2050 Guelph Line, Burlington, ON, L7R 3Z2. Included should be the name, address, telephone number and a rationale for the name suggested.
