LUXURIOUS DANIELS TOWNMANOR 8 Sports & Leisure, Friday, March 28, 2008 Halton Hills Toastmasters held its first of two annual speech contests at St Albans Parish Hall in Glen Williams. The contest consisted of two parts. The first part was an Evaluation Contest with three con- testants evaluating a speech by a guest speaker from another club. The three contestants were Nancy Burke, Howie Kumagai and Cheryl Bates. The winner of this contest was Cheryl Bates but because she would be out of town she was repre- sented by the second place contestant Nancy Burke in the area contest held at the Milton Toastmasters Club. The second part was an International Speech Contest with three contestants being evaluated. The three contestants were Sarah Palmer, Larry Nicholson and Judi Hopper. Hopper, the winner also went on to the area contest. Toastmasters is an international organization with 2,500 clubs in 90 countries. Their mission is to develop individuals public speaking skills, and to develop leadership skills through partici- pation in weekly club functions such as chairing meetings and organizing speech contests.
