The movie Amadeus represents a fairly recent opportunity for media, music and history to merge and to recreate the incredible life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In his short 35 years, Herr Mozart showed extraordinary genius cre- ating his first compositions, master- ing several musical instruments, speaking five languages, and touring Europe, all at a very young age. On April 26 the Georgetown Bach Chorale will be closing its 2007- 2008 season with two contrasting masterpieces by this prolific compos- er the exuberant Piano Concerto in A major K.488, followed by the rivet- ing Requiem in D minor. Piano Concerti are often seen today with the soloist waiting impa- tiently in front of the orchestra, while the conductor waves a baton around, happily keeping time. Well, not at THIS performance! In his concerts, Mozart would lead from the piano and insert or slightly improvise the solo passages in and out of the orchestral texture. The Chorales performance conforms to this historical precedent with the choir and chamber orchestra being led from the piano by soloist and music director Ron Greidanus. The Bach Chorale is gaining a well deserved reputation for dramat- ic and exciting performances and the famous Requiem will provide an excellent opportunity to hear the choir at its best. Do come and expe- rience an evening of unforgettable music. The concert takes place 8 p.m. at St. Johns United Church. Local artists Candace Slack and Sonja Mortimer opened their show, Spaces Embraced, at the Williams Mill Gallery in Glen Williams on Sunday. The show, which continues until April 27, is a celebration of a special reunion between the former teacher and student who became colleagues and friends after a chance 35-year reunion last year. Mortimer was Slacks Grade 8 art teacher, role model and inspiration. After meeting in Slacks studio at the Williams Mill a year ago, the two women decided to do a show together. We are embracing the 35 years which seems like just a little space in time since we last crossed paths, says Slack. Mortimer works with a variety of media that expresses her fascination with structure and ordered space. Slacks diverse style runs from abstract to realism. Her recent work combines a love for photography, painting and motorcy- cling, with a series of paintings illustrating a popular motorcycling event every Friday the 13th in Port Dover. The shows centerpiece is Slacks and Mortimers collaborative painting, also entitled Spaces Embraced. This painting harmonizes the otherwise different styles of the artists. We were right in sync, said Mortimer. A comment by one Guelph visitor, Sel Mullins, was typical of many heard among the almost 200 people who attended the show, It was a wonderful, rich, visual feast.
