12 Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, April 23, 2008 Seniors, fitting a certain criteria, will be able to get a break on their property taxes this year. Halton Hills council has approved an increase to the tax rebate program, from $200 to $400. There are about 150 seniors in this community who will benefit from this pro- gram. Seniors must be 65 years of age or older; must be receiving the Guaranteed Income Supplement, and must occupy and own a Halton Hills home. Eligible recipients will automatically receive an application in the mail in June. Applications are also available on the Towns website, www.haltonhills.ca. The cost of the program will be shared between the Town, Region and school boards. The Towns share is about $130 per appli- cation; the Regions is $170 and the school boards share is $100. The Town will spend about $20,000 on the program. Council had endorsed this great initiative, which will double the amount available to eligi- ble seniors and assist in recognizing the contri- butions that seniors make to our community, said Mayor Rick Bonnette, in a news release.
