Photo by Ted Brown Local salon supports literacy at Groan-Up spelling bee More than 25 well-known Canadian authors and celebrities such as Margaret Atwood, Anne Murray and Stephen Lewis have stepped forward to support North Haltons fifth annual Grate Groan-Up Spelling Bee. The Literacy North Halton fundraiser helps sup- port adult local literacy programs. The personalities have each donated a book either written by them or recommended because of a relevance to the cause. One childrens author, Kathy Stinson of Rockwood, chose a particularly poignant story she wrote based on a friendship she developed with an older gentleman. Stinson writes that with 26 books under her belt she has never been faced with the challenges of struggling to read and write. It was while she did a stint as a visiting author at a primary school that she got to know a caretaker who as a grandfather had recently learned to read. King of the Castle is not based on this man but on someone like him and the many adults in our country who, for one reason or another, were not lucky enough to learn to read as children. Bee organizer Theresa Macdonald wants to remind everyone that ultimately the fun event is about raising funds and awareness of the long-rang- ing affects of low literacy in adults. Literacy programs can combat nutrition and health problems, high school drop-out rates, teen parenting, joblessness, welfare dependency and social alienation, she says. The Grate Groan-Up Spelling Bee will be held Thursday, May 1 at 5:30 p.m. at Halton Hills Banquet Hall, 3090 Steeles Ave. W., Milton. The corporate bee pits teams of three from local businesses, agencies and organizations against each other in a hilarious night of costumes and antics. Audience members are invited to attend and cheer on their favourite spellers. Tickets are $30 and include dinner and the show. Tickets are available at Elsley Optical 55 Ontario St. S., Milton and at Salon 51, 51 Main St., Georgetown. Acton youth group seeks nominations On Saturday, May 24, Acton youth will seize their chance for change by hosting a day-long cele- bratory event in Prospect Park that highlights the talents and interests of local youth. The event is called Acton Youths Chance for Change. Were going to be celebrating Acton youth as important members of our community, say plan- ning committee members Dallas Shewfelt and Alannah Bowes. There will be many great events throughout the day, for all ages, and some specific to showcasing local youths talent. A nine-member committee, led by Acton youth, has been meeting weekly to plan the activities. There are specific contests designed to give youth a chance to voice their opinion, and per- spective about life in Acton, say Bowes and Shewfelt. Through a photography contest, for example, the committee is inviting youth to photograph pos- itive aspects of their community as well as what they see as opportunities for change. We see the event as being a great opportunity to not only show off the talent of local youth but to also recognize adults in the community who we feel play an important role in supporting youth, say Bowes and Shewfelt. The committee is asking Acton youth to recog- nize those Acton adults who have made a differ- ence in their lives by nominating them for a youth supporter award. As well, businesses, charities and agencies that serve youth or have volunteer oppor- tunities for youth are invited to set up a table dis- play at the event. Additional activities planned for May 24 include a feature performance by comedian and Acton native Jeff McEnery, as well as art displays, an open mic for those spontaneous performers, local band performances, improvisational activi- ties-and even an inflatable Joust game and a jump- ing giraffe for all ages! Community members-youth and adults alike- can become involved in the events planning activi- ties by: Volunteering to help with the activities Entering the photography contest Nominating a youth supporter Displaying and selling artwork at the event Sponsoring a youth supporter award For more information, e-mail Jennifer at chance4change@hotmail.com, or visit www.chance4change.blogspot.com or search Acton Youths Change for Change on Facebook.
