Instead of 1,100 candles burning brightly, as a tribute to Canadians killed during wartime, the cenotaph was charred by fire, caused when van- dals piled up the candles on one side of the monument. The Halton Hills Fire Department responded just after 4 a.m. Saturday and extinguished the fire, but the heat was intense enough to crumble a por- tion of concrete at the bottom of the cenotaph. Cost to repair the damage has yet to be determined. Remembrance Park wasnt the only target of vandals over the weekend. Fairview Cemetery in Acton had several graves defaced, with flower beds damaged and some solar lights smashed, while two benches were broken in Rotary Park. The incidents were among several acts of vandalism that have occurred around Halton Hills in recent weeks. Its very sad to see this. The dam- age well be able to fix, but how peo- ple can do this is beyond my compre- hension. This is sick, said Schenk, a member of the Candlelight Tribute Committee. (The cenotaph) is a very sensitive place. For the people who sacrificed their lives for us and for people like me because I was able to come to this country thanks to what Canadian sol- diers did in Holland, and thats why theres such a great relationship with Canadians over there.
