No Rainchecks. Home, Lawn and Garden, Wednesday, May 14, 2008 3 Did you know that your energy effi- cient home may be a haven for dust mites? Todays airtight energy efficiency homes have been invaluable in main- taining ideal temperatures and saving homeowners money. Theyre also proven to provide a comfortable living environment with a rather high relative humidity. Unfortunately, these condi- tions are also excellent prerequisites for the propagation of house dust mites. It is not the mites themselves that contain allergens but their excrement, which are triggers for asthma, eczema and allergic nasal mucous membrane inflammations. Allergen-containing mite excrement on fibers gradually falls apart into very tiny particles. The allergenic dust then flies up into the surrounding air and is inevitably inhaled as we breathe. This also happens during regu- lar vacuuming. And exposure to high concentrations of house dust allergens at a very early age greatly increases the risk of suffering from diseases such as asthma later in life. Even with regular and thorough housecleaning, dust part icles and human skin scales continuously accu- mulate. Mites derive their principal nourishment from these human and ani- mal skin scales, but also feed on fungal mold. The average size of house dust mites is 0.3mm. Most allergy sufferers dont consider particles like dust, dust mite feces, mold and animal dander, that gather under- neath the furniture, in the carpeting or just about anywhere in a home, to be the major cause of allergic reactions. The fact is, while youre vacuuming to keep your house free of those parti- cles, your ordinary vacuum cleaner may be exhausting the very dust youve col- lected back into the air not only aggravating your allergies or asthma, but l i teral ly redistr ibuting that dust throughout your home Effective Solution Fortunately there is an effective solu- t ion according to Jean Deslandes, Marketing Director for Venmar Broan- NuTone, the countrys leader in indoor air quality solutions. All dust mites and their allergens vacuumed up with a cen- tral vacuum system can be removed from your living areas& for good, she said. The latest technology in the market- place, the Broan central vacuum system provides you with a solution that will effectively eliminate particles down to 0.3 microns in size the real problem for allergy and asthma sufferers. The system acts as an environmental control to relieve allergy, asthma and respirato- ry ailments. Special Filtration The new Broan central vacuum sys- tem differs from your regular home vac- uum cleaner because of its special filtra- tion capabilities. An ordinary vacuum cleaner only removes part icles 35 microns or larger in size. The Broan central vacuum system features bags and filters with HEPA filter media able to capture and eliminate up to 99.97% of all particles down to and including 0.3 microns the size of some bacteria. This means the dust you pick up is trapped in the vacuum, not blown through the exhaust. It also features Teflon anti-stick coat- ing to reduce the sticking of dirt to fil- tration media and Microban antimicro- bial product protection to inhibit the potential growth of odor causing microbes.
