Georgetown Candlelight Tributes Candlelight Tributes honour and recognize the sacrifices and achievements of all those who served overseas and on the home front in the cause of Peace and Freedom. These ceremonies were held on May 8th 2008 marking Victory in Europe Day (VE-Day). The Georgetown Candlelight Tributes committee is an autonomous group of concerned citizens working independently from the Town of Halton Hills. The committee has a close association with the Royal Canadian Legion (Georgetown) Branch 120. The committee raises all funds for the project directly from the public. As well, all expenditures incurred are paid from the funds raised by the committee. Deck of the Week Call for a free cheerful estimate. Acton/Georgetown, Friday, May 16, 2008 3 We wanted to give them (area shoppers) a bigger, better Dollarama, and we jumped at it (the offer to rent the space). On Wednesday a saddened Irani was having the theatre equipment removed from the cine- ma and said he was to be officially out of the building yesterday (Thursday) afternoon. Ive lost a good cinema and people have lost a good place to sit and enjoy entertain- ment, said Irani, who was hoping to stay open. Im just worried about the kids in Georgetown. What are they going to do in the summer time? Its really sad, said Georgetown resident Silvana Bezina, who has been fighting to keep the theatre open since she heard a week ago it was to close. It will be really missed in the town. Theres basically nothing we can do, said Bezina. More than 2,000 signatures had been col- lected on a petition to save the cinema. They still intend to send the petition to the owner of the plaza, said Bezina. A small, but loyal, group of local theatre-goers staged a last-ditch protest in front of the Dollarama store next to Georgetown Cinemas Tuesday night in hopes that the cinemas would remain open. The Dollarama store will take over the cinemas location in September. Submitted photo Owner and customers lament closing of Georgetown Cinemas Continued from pg. 1
