Regional council recently removed the product from the recy- cling stream because the Canadian Polystyrene Recycling Associa- tion the only known market for municipal Blue Box polystyrene shut down its processing plant in Mississauga. But now, the plant has changed hands and will re-open soon as the Canadian Polystyrene Recycling Alliance. Halton Director of Waste Management Rob Rivers said that the municipality is currently in talks with the company. He said the Region hopes to have some news by the fall that puts polystyrene back in the Blue Box. The plant originally opened in 1991 and was funded by a number of resin producers, product manu- facturers and end-users of poly- styrene. It announced in December that, despite the fact the City of Toronto had decided to add polystyrene to its Blue Box collection in 2008 and it had made $300,000 in changes to accommodate that additional col- lect ion, i t was being forced to close. The plant was badly hurt by the healthier Canadian dollar and the fact many municipal i t ies dont allow residents to include poly- styrene in Blue Boxes for recycling. Haltons new waste collection program started this week. I t includes weekly Blue Box and GreenCart collection and bi-weekly garbage collection with a six-bag limit.
