Photo by Jon Borgstrom After having the long weekend off, the Halton Hills Bulldogs have three games in three days coming up as they shoot for the top spot in the Ontario Lacrosse Associations East Conference. The Bulldogs will meet the Oakville Buzz for the first time this season Friday at the Glen Abbey Recreation Centre, then host Gloucester Saturday beginning at 7:30 p.m. A trip to Huntsville follows Sunday afternoon. Halton Hills improved its record to 7-1-0 with a 10-7 comeback victory over the guest Markham Ironheads Thursday night. Markham led 4-2 after the first period, but the Bulldogs took control after that, outscoring the opposition 4-0 in the middle stanza. Pat Saunders (4), Nic Grasby (2), Evan Whillans (2), Kyle Davis and Peter Laidlaw scored for the home side. After this weekends action, the Dogs will play six of their final nine regular season con- tests at home. A couple of Georgetown residents recently played important roles both on the court and as peacemakers for a Mississauga volleyball squad that earned gold medals at the Canadian Open under-18 boys championships in Ottawa. As the 20th seed out of 40 teams entered in Volleyball Canadas tour- nament at Carleton University, the Pakmen were afterthoughts when the pre-tournament favourites were con- sidered, yet the Mississauga side was able to knock off the top seeds on their way to the national title. There was an article on the Volleyball Canada website that pre- dicted the four teams that were prob- ably going to be in the semis, said Devin Rattie, the Pakmens starting libero. They talked about Manitoba, the team we beat in the finals, they talked about Ottawa, the team we beat in the quarters, Winnipeg, the team we beat in the semis, and a Toronto team which came third. Nobody thought we were going to be even close. The Pakmen went 4-2 in the pre- liminary round-robin segment, which included a loss to the defending champion Manitoba Bisons, whom they would later beat in the finals in front of over 3,000 spectators. Setter/server Matt Barker and Rattie played for the Georgetown Rebel senior high school team that won the consolation title at the OFSAA finals in November, having lost to Mississauga Secondary School in a tightly contested semi-final match. A number of the Pakmen also played for that MSS side in Ottawa and tended to be somewhat emotion- al at times. The core of the team has been together for about four years and there were some players from Toronto, and the Georgetown guys brought a lot of peace to the team, Barker chuckled. Barker will attend Fanshawe College in September and play on the varsity volleyball squad, while Rattie plans to move on to the university level with either York or Guelph. Its been a pretty great year, added Barker. Gold with GDHS at the provincial co-ed sixes, third at OFSAA with the boys team and gold at nationals. Georgetown golfers finished just out of the lead at the Golf Association of Ontarios first tournament last week, the mens Better Ball championship held at the Oakdale Golf & Country Club in Downsview. North Halton Golf & Country Club member Bill Swartz teamed up with the National Golf Clubs Dan Partland to finish tied for first after regulation play, then lost in a playoff to a pair of Caledon teenagers. Swartz, 46, and his partner finished up at three under par for the 18- hole event. A couple of 17-year-olds from Georgetown, Luke Ovenden and Ryan Thomson, tied for third at minus two.
