The strengths-based program gives youth coping tools to deal with the often hectic life around them. She is always there if something goes wrong and she is easy to talk to, says Grade 11 student Jessica Payne. She has lived through what we are going through and she knows how to help us through it. Legere offers important advice for adults in their relation- ships with younger community members. Bottom line give them a chance. Some people may not believe they can turn out to be these great adults who can have successful lives. Give youth a chance to be unique and to show their true colours. Judy Robinson and Amanda Kostjuk are also award winners. The two youth workers co-ordinate programming at the Off The Wall youth centre. At the centre, youth can hang out or partici- pate in activities such as pool, foosball, computer games, crafts and positive discussions. The centre has couches and TVs for watching movies or playing video games. Spencer Pestell spends his Wednesdays at Off The Wall. Hes thankful for a place to hang out that is both safe and fun. It gives me something to do, he says. Amanda and Judy are really good youth workers. They are very friendly and make us feel welcome. Also receiving an award is Shawn Brown, a teacher and guid- ance counsellor at Acton High School who was nominated because of his easy-going nature and approachabilty when working with his students. The youth have described him as someone with a great sense of humour who you can talk to about anything. The Acton Youths Chance for Change event represented the efforts of youth in Acton with support from Halton Region, Our Kids Network, Recreation and Parks, Links2Care (Off The Wall) and Halton Regional Police Service. Additional support was provided by POSSE, Acton High School, McKenzie-Smith Bennett and St. Joseph School.
