The Jaguars thought they had the 2007 title all wrapped up after leading throughout the game, but gave up a last-second goal and lost 8-7 to Notre Dame, missing out on a trip to the provincial finals. The circumstances this time around were reminis- cent of last year, with CtK hosting the Halton final and also taking an early 3-0 lead. Mike Sgarbossa had a hat trick in the opening 10 minutes for the Jags, but as was the case in the inaugural match, the Fighting Irish roared back to tie the score. This time, however, the home side would prevail, using markers by Steve Silas, Sgarbossa, J.J. Laforet and Seth Laidlaw to post a 7-5 triumph. Goaltender Ryan Kelly stopped a couple of break- aways for the champs and also helped his squad main- tain ball possession for a large part of the second half. We were up 3-0 and the guys started to get a little overconfident again, said CtK coach Chad Piovesan. We tried to slow down the game and Notre Dame came back and tied it. Fortunately (Notre Dame) kept calling time outs at opportune times for us, so we got to settle everybody down. You could tell that we still had some jitters after what happened last year a little bit. But the thing today was that even if Notre Dame shut down our top players, we just had too much depth for them to handle. The Jags now move on to the eight-team OFSAA AAA/AAAA Festival, to be held next Wednesday and Thursday in Peterborough. Rugby In just their second year back in the Halton league, the Georgetown junior rebels claimed the Tier II divi- sion championship on Wednesday with a 36-12 victo- ry over Hamilton Cathedral in Burlington to complete their undefeated season. Man of the match Aaron Francis scored three tries for the 9-0 Rebels , with Devon Pel lerant, John MacDonald and Nolan Atkinson also getting in for major scores. Kyle Speers added three converts and a penalty kick. Soccer Christ the Kings senior boys will try to make their first-ever trip to the OFSAA AAAA championships with a win at the Golden Horseshoe final on Monday in Hamilton, but their next opponent looks to be quite formidable. The Cardinal Newman Express has gone undefeated this season and clinched their 20th Steel City Catholic title on Wednesday with a 4-1 win over St. Thomas More, setting up their showdown with CtK.
