Police blotter Man charged in domestic dispute A jury made several safety recommendations following a coroners inquest last week into the death of Tim DaSilva, the 20-year-old Milton man who died when he was crushed by a roller he was operating while building a BMX bike track at Halton Place in 2006. Following the two-day inquest held in Milton, the coroners jury recommended the Ministry of Labour (MOL) consider a regulation requiring all ride-on construction machinery have an active restraint lap bar, as well as a seatbelt that cant be bypassed, and prevents operation of the equip- ment unless engaged. The jury also recommended the MOL consider a regulation requiring all ride-on-roller devices have a passive containment system that would keep the operator within the Roll Over Protection System (ROPS) if there were a rollover. It also recommended the MOL consider requiring a spotter when a ride-on roller is used on surfaces that exceed a specific gradient or slope. The final recommendation made was that the MOL consider a regulation requiring an employer keep appropriate records of safety training and safety advisories given to employees. The records would include an employees signature acknowl- edging completion of hands-on training and demonstrated competency of the equipment being used. The recommendations are not mandatory but are forwarded to the MOL said a spokesperson for the Office of the Chief Coroner. She said the MOL has a year to respond.
