I have always felt that groups l ike the FCM speak best when they speak with one voice, said Somerville. Our continued advo- cacy and speaking with one voice has helped us achieve municipal exe- mption from GST, infra- structure investment through gas tax revenues, and the elimination of GTA pooling. There is still the need for long-term core stable funding for all of us, and we can achieve it by working togeth- er. Somerville has served as a local and regional council lor for 11 years. Last year, he sat on various committees of FCM, including con- ference planning, international development and the rural forum. I would like to offer Councillor Somerville my congratulations for his election to the FCM board, said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. His dedication to the con- stituents of Halton Hills is clear, as is his commitment to helping Halton Region thrive. I know he will work hard to repre- sent the interests of the local municipalit ies in Halton and across Ontario. The FCM has been the national voice of munici- pal government s ince 1901. With more than 1,600 members, FCM represents the interests of municipalities on policy and program matters that fall within federal juris- diction. Members include Canadas largest cities, small urban and rural communities, and 18 provincial and territorial municipal associa- tions. At a recent ceremony, Waterloo Regional Police awarded a civilian citation to James Barton, 42, of Acton for his role in the December 17, 2007 incident. Police say at about 6:45 p.m. that day two men entered the Food Basics store on Highland Rd. W. where Barton, a private investigator, was working security. The men approached a cashier and passed her a note saying the store was being held up. One man lifted up his sweater, revealing what appeared to be a black handgun. The manager of the store told the two men that police had been called, and he informed Barton, who was outside of the store at the time, that the store was being robbed. Barton, the manager and another employee went behind the store where they saw the two men, who approached them. One of the suspects pointed a handgun at the manager and Barton, threatening both of them. The two suspects then fled on foot. Barton followed at a safe distance behind and called police on his cell phone. The suspects were seen burying a Santa hat and beard in a snow bank. Barton saw the men enter a LCBO store about 100 metres from the grocery store, and alerted police to their location. Police arrived and the two men were arrest- ed. Police found a black plastic replica handgun in the coat pocket of one of the suspects. The Santa hat and beard were recovered from the snow bank. Police say Bartons keen observation skills and bravery in following the suspects allowed police to quickly apprehend them. Barton said he was terrified when the sus- pect pointed what at the time he thought was a real gun at him. He is pleased his efforts helped lead to the arrests of two suspects. Im glad I could help somebody and at least get them off the streets, said Barton.
