The first phase of this project entails the development of a CIP Strategy. Where Child Abuse Hurts Most Sometimes the worst scars of child abuse cant be seen. Whether physical or emotional, abuse attacks a childs self-esteem and emotional development, leaving long-term emotional trauma and pain. You can help prevent child abuse by being a nurturing parent or caregiver. By letting children know they are special, competent and loved, you can help them develop positive self-images and happier futures. If you feel overwhelmed, angry or frustrated as a parent, help is out there for you. Look in your area for support groups and services, or talk to a trusted friend, family member, pastor or doctor about what you can do to protect and support your child. If we all do our part to prevent child abuse, well get to the heart of the matter. 8 Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, June 18, 2008 A couple of residents from Norval were at Halton Regions Planning and Public Works committee meeting last Wednesday asking the Region not to take land for a road widening at the intersection of Adamson St. and Hwy. 7. Norval Community Association presi- dent Kathy Gastle, former mayor of Halton Hills, asked the committee to help us save the little village of Norval. Were asking this committee to assist us and not allow the regional staff to take the road widening at the centre of the heart of our village of Norval, said Gastle. Gastle was referring to the fact that Halton Region is proposing to obtain some land from The Carpet Palace property at the southwest corner of Adamson and Hwy. 7, if the owners redevelop that site, to add a left turn lane on Adamson St. The plan arose after the owners of The Carpet Palace submitted a site plan to the Town of Halton Hills for a new building on their lot. Their plan is to tear down their current building which some Norval residents are opposed to and put up a new building at the southwest corner of the property. Halton Region took the opportunity through the site plan process to take some land to widen the road in that area if the plan is approved. Where possible, the policy of the Region is to obtain land for future road widening as the site develops or redevel- ops, said Mark Meneray, Acting Comm- issioner of Planning and Public Works in a memo to committee members at the meet- ing. The negotiated settlement allows the Region to put in a left-turn lane to increase the required capacity of the overall intersec- tion and to improve the safety conditions, at such time that the road is reconstructed. He said currently Adamson St. is slated for reconstruction in 2012. Norval resident Mary Churchill, the other area resident who spoke at the meet- ing, stressed that the residents dont want Hwy. 7 or Adamson St. to be widened. We dont want a turning lane cutting through the southwest corner of that inter- section, Churchill said. Both Churchill and Gastle called for a bypass around Norval. Burlington Councillor Jack Dennison asked Gastle if the retailers of Norval want- ed a bypass. Gastle said, of course. He also asked if they had researched other communities that had been bypassed, and if a bypass would have a negative effect on tourism in Norval. Gastle said it wouldnt. Scholars from around the world find Norval on their own, said Gastle. The Japanese tourists find Norval. They get on the buses at the airport and drive to our village. Lucy Maud Montgomery (author of Anne of Green Gables) has made Norval famous, and, I believe, the Region of Halton. Committee supported a recommendation for a Region staff report on the information received by Gastle.
