William Hay Heaven 1921-2008 Beloved husband of Dorothy, father of four and grand- father of six, Bill died on Saturday, June 14, 2008, in Georgetown, Ont. Born in Ottawa on Jan. 2, 1921, Bill moved to Orillia at the age of eight with his mother and two brothers, after his father, an Anglican priest cover- ing three parishes, died of pneumonia. He joined the Canadian Air Force in 1941 and served in remote ra- dar posts in Newfoundland and British Columbia as a sergeant of communication until the end of the war. In 1951, he married an Orillia girl, Dorothy Bunker, and with the help of a government loan for veterans and experience gleaned from the war, enrolled in the Uni- versity of Toronto's electrical engineering program. After graduation, he worked on radar and broadcasting in Belleville, Ont., for Northern Electric Co., now Nortel, before transferring to London, Ont., to work on tele- phone research and development. Active in his church, his community and his workplace, Bill was a truly good man, never shying from adversity to stand up for his principles and the rights of others. In the late 1960's, he helped establish the Urban League of Lon- don, a city-wide civic activism group. After he retired, he worked in India and travelled to China as a volun- teer for the Canadian Executive Service Organization. He never stopped enjoying life nor people; in his later years he earned his amateur pilot's licence, took up skydiving and travelled the world with his wife. When he developed Alzheimer's disease, he accepted that, too, with dignity and remarkable forbearance. He will be missed by his many friends, but mostly by his fami- ly, whom he cherished. Bill will be buried beside his parents at St. James Cemetery in Orillia in a private family ceremony. A memorial will also be erected at the family cottage near Marmora, Ont., his nirvana. Donations to the Alzheimer Society would be welcome.
