Acton/Georgetown, Friday, July 4, 2008 11 HILLSVIEW NEWS FROM THE SENIORS CENTRES I hope you all found something typ- ically Canadian to do on Canada Day. I saw quite a few of you down at the Glen for their celebration and what a great job they do. Not only that, the organizers seemed to be able to order up near perfect weather. Thank you to all who were involved in any way with this great Canada Day celebration. Summer has arrived at the Centre but that doesnt mean we have closed up shop. All the drop-in programs are still continuing at their regular times. If you are thinking about becoming a member drop into the Centre any day from Monday to Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. We are located at the back of the Indoor Mall at 318 Guelph Street. Someone will gladly show you around and you can get a copy of our newsletter. If you have any questions, the Centre can be reached at 905-877-6444 There is some important news from the Travel Desk. First if you are inter- ested you can become a volunteer to organize day trips over and above those from the Travel Desk. See our Co-ordinator Terri Forbes. Acton has a very lively group doing this and they have visited some really interesting places. We can too if someone will take on the job of organizing them. Im sure Terri will be a great help. It seems that the bus to Casino Rama once a month has a list of regu- lars who go leaving others out. Any of the non-regulars interested in going to Rama, probably every third month, are asked to sign the Sheet of Interest found at the Travel Desk. Please do this as soon as possible. If there is a lack of interest, the offer will be with- drawn. If you see a trip from the Great Canadian booklet that you are plan- ning to take, you can book it though the Travel Desk at the Centre. If you do so the Centre will receive as per- centage of the cost. The renovations are going well. A special thanks to John Archibald, from the Town, and Noel Stoyles and his The children are off for the summer and everyone is looking forward to the holidays. Some of our members will be busy visiting and babysitting the grand- children (or great grandchildren) dur- ing the summer. Several of our programs will be winding down for the summer, but I understand the carpet bowling would like to continue if there is enough inter- est. The two exercise groups will com- bine and one class will run on Wednesday mornings at 9:15 a.m. dur- ing July and August. The art class had their final session last week and Maria says they will re-start in the fall. Hopefully during the next few months, they will have the chance to use their artistic talents to capture the summer. Thursday morning they were getting pointers on painting a waterfall and it was just beautiful. Of course, the avid players will still meet on Thursday mornings and after- noons and the Bingo enthusiasts on Friday afternoons following lunch. Five people enjoyed an exciting game of carpet bowling last week. Mary Walsmas Black team beat Sienna Anckers Brown team 13 to 12. It was a very close game until the last end when Betty Blain took out four balls with the white ball, keeping the Black team in the lead. Good news! The pool table is finally cleared (and hopefully will stay so). Members, why dont you invite a cou- ple of friends to join you. We were hop- ing that some brave person would offer to give pointers so people wouldnt feel intimidated and could learn to play. The Looking to the Future (LTTF) committee is looking at a variety of ways to raise funds to assist in the future plans for a much-needed expan- sion to our Centre. David Burland with Johnson Associates Halton Ltd. has offered to assist us with this fundraising endeavor. Members will receive a letter within the next few weeks with further details. A date to remember: The LTTF has another fundraising event planned for Saturday, Dec. 27 (Christmas and new Year). We are having a Gala event, which will include music, dancing, entertainment and a late hot and cold buffet. More details later. The trip to Niagara on the Lake is finalized and the prize set. Hopefully there wont be any more surprises with the price of gas before we go). We will be using a regular luxury coach for this trip and a local dentist has generously offered to subsidize part of the cost of the bus. On Thursday afternoons Bid Euchre Frances Hogenbirk had a mooner really early in the game followed shortly after by Mae Milton. It was a full bus again for Rama on Wednesday, June 25th and the 50/50 was won by Marg Gage, the birthday prizes by Tony Callucci and Cathy Noseworthy and sitting in the lucky seats were Jean Sykes, Allan McFadden, Marg Gage, Donna Rowley and Shirley Beaumont. (I hope Marg Gages luck held while playing in the Casino.) The next trip will be on Wednesday, July 30 and please note there has been a slight increase in the cost due to the price of fuel. It will now cost $7, up from $5. On Tuesday mornings during July and August we will have a coffee and chat morning a great way to spend a couple of hours cooling off and meeting new friends. The Acton Seniors Centre offers people 55 plus a complimentary mem- bership for July and August. Just drop in and the receptionist will be happy to give you one. In September we start prorating the membership for the remainder of the year, plus 2009. If you join the Acton Centre, you can also visit and enjoy the facilities in the Georgetown Centre. If youre shopping in Georgetown, take a few minutes and drop in to see what they might offer that would interest you. There was no 50/50 winner on Friday. JULIE CONROY Acton Seniors Centre FLORENCE RIEHL Georgetown Seniors Centre Georgetown: New members welcome crew who have accommodated us above andbeyond our expectations. Drop in around the end of July to take a look at your new and improved Centre. It has taken on a new life. Every time I go to the Centre I meet someone new. I would like to meet you so why not come on for a visit. You know where we are and the times we are open. See you soon. Acton: Pool table is cleared! Come play!
