Died peacefully on Saturday, September 13, 2008 at the Milton District Hospital in his 80th year. Survived by his beloved wife Barbara (nee Hughes), his four loving children, James of Hornby, Julie (Kelly) of St. Catharines, Jeffrey (Susan) of Streetsville and Jennifer (Ralph) of Georgetown. Proud Grandpa of Tara, Tabitha, Amy and Ryan Snow, Travis and Matthew Osborne. Also survived by his brother Delbert, niece Gwen and nephew Bill. Pre- deceased by his parents, Wilfred O. and Margaret F. (Devlin) Snow, and his oldest brother, Flight Sgt. William Oliver Snow, Killed in Action, September 16th, 1942 while serving on a Lancaster Bomber with the RCAF in the Battle of Britain on a bombing mission over Essen, Germany. Born on the family farm in Esquesing Township on July 12th, 1929, he lived a full life in his beloved Region of Halton, where he attended Quatra Bras and Bruce Street Public School and Milton District High School. From his farm background, he started working as a carpenter in Oakville in 1947, starting his own construction company, Snow Construction Limited, in 1948. At first the company built many houses in Oakville, then branching out to building many schools, churches, factories, commercial buildings and apartments in the area. Jim joined the Oakville Lions Club in 1950, being the youngest club member at that time. He has been an active member for over 58 years, serving as President in 1957/58, District Governor in 1966/67 and was honoured with a Life Membership in 1979. On September 13th, 1952 he married his loving wife, Barbara Hughes and they were blessed with four wonderful children, James Douglas, Julie Barbara, Jeffrey Owen and Jennifer Nancy. From 1969 to 1986 he owned and operated Tube-Fab Ltd, an aircraft parts manufacturer located in Streetsville. A retired Member of the Ontario Legislature, being first elected in 1967, where he served for 18 years as the Progressive Conservative MPP for the Halton East and Oakville Ridings, being re-elected 4 times. During those terms he was Minister of Government Services for 4 years and Minister of Transpor- tation and Communications for 10 years, retiring and not seeking re-election in 1985. He then was appointed by the Federal Government and served for 5 years as the first Chairman of the Civil Aviation Tribunal in Ottawa. Having retired five times, he found retirement not of his liking. After several years of woodworking and creating wonderful projects and doing volunteer work with several organiza- tions, he needed a new challenge. In 2000, Jim's family, became sole owner of Hornby Glen Golf Course. On August 16th 2005 the course was sold and Jim retired again. After the sale of the Golf Course, Jim and Barbara donated the Pineland Hornby property, their home for 46 years to the Salvation Army, and moved to their new home on the Niagara Escarpment. In his lifetime he achieved the greatest wealth a person can possess; a name which stood for truth, fairness and honest business practices; the fulfillment which came from years of commitment to his principles and his community; the boundless delight of his four children, six grandchildren and the profound love of his wife the affection and respect of countless friends and associates;, During his construction years, many buildings were built with no formal contract, only a hand shake. During his years as a Minister of the Crown, he was known by hundreds of members of municipal delegations as al- ways giving an answer and reason to their requests. A pilot and aircraft owner for over 40 years, he was an active member, Director, Treasurer and President of the Canadian Owners & Pilots Association and COPA Flight 28 Inc. at Burlington Air Park. When he turned 70 in 1999 he sold his beloved Cessna 210 and gave up flying. Family and friends are invited to visit at the McKERSIE-KOCHER FUNERAL HOME 114 Main St. Milton 905-878-4452 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm on Wednesday. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel on Thursday, September 18, 2008 at 10:00 am. A private burial will be in the family plot at Milton Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lions Foundation of Canada, Canine Vision Leader Dog School, Oakville, ON or to the Boston Presbyterian Church, Memorial Fund, in his memory. Letters of condolence may be left for the family at www.mckersie-kocher.ca DEATHS 736 Tree ServiceAt Your Service740
