As the William Mill in Glen Williams prepares for its Tiny Treasures Christmas show and sale, The Independent & Free Press is running a series giving readers a glimpse of the most valuable treasure of all - the artists. This is the third story of the series. The Stone Building at The Williams Mill includes the studios of three painters. Each of them is intrigued by the effect natural lighting has on a scene to be painted. Jim Reid paints on location, often car- rying large canvases strapped to his back into the woods behind his home in Terra Cotta. He applies ten to twenty layers of paint, visiting the subject at different times of day and seasons to capture its essence. His series, Ferals, applauds the once cultivated and controlled apple trees that now grow wild. Reids painting, Mer Bleue Bog, hangs in the reception room at Rideau Hall, the Governor Generals home. As well as historic buildings, heritage fruit is a favorite subject for Marlene Madole. Using watercolour allows for translucency that reflects the beauty of the form. Whether painting fruit or architec- ture, Madole returns to the site to experi- ence the effect different light and shadows has on a subject. This is her 12th year at the Mill. Madole is president of the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour (CSPWC). Simon Fraser MacDonald paints in dif- ferent styles and media. He also designs and carves totem poles using sacred sym- bology. His series, Pickerel Weeds, is a dramatic example of the effect of lighting on a scene. He paints in water colour when he travels so he can quickly record the scene and the particular lighting. He often recreates the work in a different medium. MacDonald is a member of Beaux Arts, Brampton. Each artist will create small pieces of work to be available at Tiny Treasures, November 16-Christmas. The Williams Mill Gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday,12-5 p.m. Studios open: Fridays and Saturdays, 12-5 p.m. Info: 905-873- 8203, www.williamsmill.com Simon Fraser MacDonald (left) and Marlene Madole hold examples of their art as they stand with Jim Reid in front of one of his paintings from his Ferals series. Reid promises to have work thats easier to wrap avail- able at Tiny Treasures Christmas show and sale at The Williams Mill. He also runs a framing business from the Mill.
