A plan is important because it prepares everyone so they can escape a fire at their home quickly and safely even through the thick smoke and deadly gases that make it hard to see or breathe. Halton Hills Fire Chief Brent Marshall says in a fire, hesitation resulting from not knowing what to do can be deadly. Having an escape plan and practising it can make the difference between living to share the experi- ence with others, or possibly dying from the experience. A 2004 study commissioned by the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs found that 64 per cent of Canadians claim to have a home escape plan. Of those with a plan 63 per cent had not practised their escape plan with family members even once. Most people underestimate the speed and power of fire and smoke, and the danger they pose, said Fire Chief Brent Marshall. As a result, they get complacent about fire safety. It seems hard to believe but, every sec- ond counts in a f ire. Most unfortunate though, when a fatality occurs close to home, only then will people change their attitudes and adopt life-saving behaviours to protect themselves and their loved ones. Even then it appears it is only for a short term before these same people lax back to previous behaviours. Staff of Halton Hills Fire Protection and Prevention Services encourages families to plan their escape and install and maintain smoke alarms. With the aim of increasing public fire safety awareness and to encourage children to practice home escape plans fire depart- ment staff challenge every principal, custodi- an, volunteer, teacher and student to get out of school safely during the drill Thursday, Oct. 11 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Fire Prevention staff will visit area schools if given sufficient notice. Everyone is encouraged to take part in the drill.
