The play, written by Ted Willis, is based on the highly successful series of books, written by Richard Gordon. Gordon was a doctor himself, and many of the accounts in his books were reputed to be exaggerated stories of actual events. The books led to seven very well received movies, most of which starred Dirk Bogarde as Simon Sparrow, the bud- ding, but hapless, young surgeon. After the movies came a London Weekend Television production which spawned five follow ups including Doctor At Large Doctor At Sea and Doctor On Call. The play was written in 1956, follow- ing the release of the third book, and just prior to the making of the first film, which is based largely on the play. The play focuses on the first years of medical school for young Simon Sparrow, who is timid and shy with everyone, especially the ladies. He is thrust into the path of the two worst influences he could find, Tony Grimsdyke and John Evans, the former a lazy womanizer, the latter an unfocused sports fanatic. The two lead Simon into all sorts of trouble, yet somehow manage to help mold him into a better man along the way. Simon returns the favor, helping Tony and John become more responsible. Some of the highlights of the play include an energetic drinking scene, in which Simon is bloodied; a Christmas play rehearsal which has an hilarious out- come and a mock operation performed in the students flat on the hospital porter! A can-can dance, the man in drag routine, a pub song sing along and a scene best described as the date from hell, round out the laughs. Carrying the fun along is a delightful collection of characters: Vera, the French landlady of Tony and Johns building, also Tonys girlfriend. She is a sexy and outgoing lady, but she has an eye on the future and marriage Nurse Mary Winslow, known affectionately by the lads as Rigor Mortis or Riggie for short. It is never actually explained why she has this nick- name, but you can guess from her behavior! Sir Lancelot Spatt, the bombastic Head Dean of Medicine, also Simons uncle. Spatt is senile and scatter-brained, but still drills the lads frequently, including a mock operation performed on their kitchen table! Bromley, the hospital porter a true friend to the boys, he takes his reward in the form of free beer, which he swigs effortlessly. A bit of a lush, but always there for the lads in a pinch. The Matron of Nurses is an overbearing prude, who has an eye out for the three boys, who insist on mucking about with her nurses Janet is The Matrons niece, and she has her eye on Simon, as a marriage prospect. The climax of the play revolves around Tony and the others rescuing Simon from such a fate! The play features a few familiar Castaways faces, but five newcomers join the cast: Aaron Ally as Simon, Andrew Liptak as Bromley, Teresa Simmons as the Stage Manager, Ashley Mancuso as Matron and Jennifer Untinen as Janet. The latter two ladies are home grown talent, living in Georgetown! Doctor In The House is produced by Sandra Curran, who brought audiences The Sensuous Senator and The Amorous Ambassador last year. The show runs October 18, 19 and 20, with two shows on Saturday, a 2 p.m. matinee and an 8 p.m. closing night performance. Tickets are $22 for adults, $16 for seniors/students, Group rate is $10 for 12 persons or more.
