We raised our family here and are proud to have both our children and their families residing in our community. Together we have sometimes participated, but always watched, the Georgetown Lions Santa Claus Parade. Several months ago, as a march- ing member of the Toronto Signals Band, I approached parade chair- person Al Watt and asked if they might consider including our band in their parade this year. As reported in this newspaper, the members of the Toronto Signals Band were shocked and deeply saddened by the death of John Longstreet, our drum major. John was proudly leading us in the parade when he suffered a fatal heart attack. Members of our band who accompanied John to the hospital said that the compassion and pro- fessionalism of the doctors, hospi- tal staff, ambulance attendants and police officers was exceptional. The outpouring of condolences, cards and telephone calls from our community is overwhelming. The Independent & Free Press, Cogeco TV and the Lions Club are sending the band DVDs and photographs that I know will be cherished. The legion staff was most help- ful and supportive to the band at their faci l i ty af ter the parade. Members of the Lions Club parade committee and the legion attended the funeral in Mississauga. Their concern and thoughtfulness was an inspiration to Johns family and members of the band. Johns family and the Toronto Signals Band and I would like to thank everyone for their support during this difficult time. Tom Johnson, Georgetown Letters to the editor Bandmate thanks everyone for support Dear editor, Re: Recent letter Follow Stroud, ban cats outside. My cats are part of Marions prob- lem. She has a beautiful garden back- ing onto woods with many bird feed- ers. The real issue is the cats scare the birds, but so do the squirrels and other wild animals. As for the mess in the garden, rac- coons and skunks also participate in this. Maybe we can get the Town to monitor their actions? My cats also catch mice, moles and rats, keeping them out of mine and my neighbours homes and sheds. Youre welcome, Marion. I dont like to judge others opin- ions, but maybe we should embrace the neighbours cat, along with all the other wildlife in our neighbourhood as I am sure with all the development going on it will one day be gone. Carl Blight, Georgetown Reader is happy to let cat roam neighbourhood
