Chief of Fire Prevent ion & Publ ic Education Harry Olivieri recommends that before purchasing a wood burning stove or fireplace people should: 1. Check municipal bylaws for necessary building permits, inspection and fees. 2. Shop around and make inquiries from competent, qualified retailers. Ask if they are Wood Energy Technical Training (WETT) certified. 3. Check with your insurance agent for any possible requirements they may have regarding fire insurance coverage. 4. Dont be over-sold. Buy the appliance most suited for the area it is to heat. Bigger is not always better in this case. 5. Ensure all manufacturers instructions are followed. This appliance is designed and built to certain criteria. Do not deviate from these instructions. 6. If the decision to buy is confirmed, choose a reputable installer and one who is WETT certified. Your insurance company may be able to provide references. 7 . With the insta l lat ion completed, inspections passed, sit back, relax and feel the warmth of the fire. Olivieri adds, above all, make sure your home is equipped with working smoke alarms on each level. Additional information about wood heat- ing appliances can be obtained by calling David Ford, Fire Safety Specialist at 905- 873-2601 ext. 2115, or Pat Woods, Fire Safety Technician, ext. 2118.
