Acton/Georgetown, Friday, September 26, 2008 7 In spite of the fact that the calendar says we just began autumn, many people I chat with feel like were still in summer mode. Now there are a couple of explanations for this phenomenon, the most logical being the fact that we had such a miserable summer, with torrents of rain almost every other day, that we didnt really experience summer weather until a week or so ago. But for me and The Sidekick, summer seemed a bit too short for another reason. Since the first of July, we have attended five weddings two on her side, two on my side, and one was a joint one. Now I admit, I enjoy a good wedding. For me, weddings are times for good conversa- tion, wining, dining and dancing, catching up on old friends and their families, as well as an oppor- tunity to see how badly those same old friends and relatives have aged since the last family function. Now on the other hand, The Sidekick LOVES a wedding but for totally different reasons. When she attends a wedding, she can cry tears of joy, and make her mascara run, and say how absolutely beautiful it all is. Its a female thing I guess. But even she recently admitted, that by the time one attends (and cries at) five ceremonies in one summer, the appeal starts to wear thin. (Personally, I think shes simply dehydrated herself by crying too much.) Last Sunday night after we got home from my nephews wedding in Peterborough, I thought about this past summer and the numerous nuptials we have witnessed. It suddenly occurred to me why the summer seemed so short it was all those weddings! Think about it, summer is usually considered about 10 weeks long, running from the first of July to mid-September. Thats 10 summer weekends in total- ten Saturdays, and ten Sundays. But this summer, we spent half of those 10 Saturdays at weddings. On top of that, three of those weddings were out of towners and we stayed over, pretty much using up three Sundays as well. I figure we drove a couple thousand klicks get- ting to and from four of the five weddings, (one was right at home on the farm) and we spent more than four hours behind the wheel driving to and from each out-of-town ceremony. So that accounts for more than half of the summer shot to bits right there. Add to that those farming commitments we have at home over those same summer months, and the remaining five weekends were pretty much used up as well. Now dont get me wrong here I do love wed- dings, and all the things that go with them. And we were delighted to be invited to all five of them this summer; we wouldnt have missed them for the world. Its just a case of wedding overload. The best way I figure I can describe it is to compare it to having a Christmas turkey every Saturday for the entire month of January. In time, one becomes a lit- tle less excited about snapping yet another wish- bone. But were now into fall, and the weather is better than it has been all summer. Its sunny, its fresh, and there hasnt been too much rain. It even feels like summer. And best of all, theres not one wedding on the horizon for The Sidekick and me. Well, at least not yet....
