Are you interested in writ- ing? Would you like to hear an author read from her own pub- lished work? If youve answered yes, then sign up for a writing workshop to be held Friday, October 17 from 7- 8:30 p.m. at The Freckled Lion Bookstore, 56 Main St. South, Georgetown. As well as offering creative writing activities, Georgetown writer Lisabeth Jackson will be reading from the new young adult book, Cleavage: Breakaway Fiction for Real Girls, published by Sumach Press. She will also be signing copies of the book. Jackson grew up in Georgetown and loved to write from an early age. Language Arts and English were my favourite subjects, she said. Many of my teachers helped to cultivate my interest in becom- ing a writer. To this day, I appreci- ate their encouragement. While majoring in Fine Arts Studies at York University, Jackson took creative writing courses, but eventually decided she didnt want to write adult fiction. The books which really made an impact on me were all written for and about young adults, so I decided to pursue that genre. When editors Deb Loughead and Jocelyn Shipley put out a call for story submissions on behalf of Sumach Press, Jackson was imme- diately inspired. The editors were collecting stories on girls and body image and I was very pleased to have my story, Presenting Miss Gorilla Legs, included in this anthology, Jackson says. The 15 stories in Cleavage were written by authors from across North America, and range from hilarious and comfort- ing, to edgy and intense. I wrote my story to challenge peoples ideas about beauty, says Jackson, and I look forward to the workshop, where I can share my writing experience and encour- age girls to write their own sto- ries. Cleavage: Breakaway Fiction for Real Girls is currently available at The Freckled Lion as well as other bookstores. Spaces are limited for the workshop, so please register at The Freckled Lion, 905-873-1213 or books@freckledlion.com by Wednesday, October 15. School of Rock is the perfect opportunity for up and coming musicians to play in a band and take the stage. This environment offers students a valuable musical experience that compliments indi- vidual practice time. Learn how to share ideas and creatively collabo- rate, how to work toward goals as part of a team, all while improving technique on your own instrument! School of Rock is a 12-week pro- gram with 90-minute lessons once a week. Ensembles will include guitar, bass, drums, percussion, piano and vocal. There is a maximum of six members per band and the program is open to students of all ages and skill levels. Each School of Rock band sets out to learn four to five songs that will be performed at a concert venue in front of a live audience to complete the program. Over the course of the term, groups are given the tools for effective rehearsal and communication, and will be required to meet weekly deadlines. The band will also have hands-on experience learning about basic audio engineering, stage lighting and band management skills. Professional instructors will men- tor, motivate and direct students in both one-on-one and group settings to ensure that the band successfully reaches its goals. Students are matched according to age, skill and musical taste. The course fee is $299.99 with no other fees or taxes. Spaces are limited. A final performance will be held at West 7 Night Club in Norval. It is a free concert that the company puts on for the Halton, Peel and surroundings regions.
