National Post Editorial, November 27th, 2006 www.chong.ca 4 Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, October 8, 2008 The family of a three-year-old Georgetown boy who died of a rare form of cancer last year has launched a fund to raise money to help find a cure for the disease. Aidans Quest Fund has been set up at Torontos Hospital for Sick Children to raise money for research into neuroblastoma cancer. It was started by Aidans aunt Theresa Sunseri. My husband and I want to give back and the only way we could do that is to help other chil- dren with neuroblastoma, said Aidans mom Donna Benoit. Aidan died of the disease last October after battling the cancer for more than a year. The family is hosting a fundrais- er dinner/dance on Oct. 24 at Caesars Banquet Hall in Bolton. Money raised at the dinner, dance, silent auction, sale of raffle and door prize tickets will go to the research fund. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m. The cost per person is $80. Sunseri said the goal is to sell 300 tickets and raise $25,000 in total. Seven companies have sponsored the event so far including: Halton Hills Rad & Tire, Dixie Auto Group Georgetown Kia, Bos Lift Truck Sales, Georgetown Market Place and On-Time Mobile. On hand for the event will be Toronto Maple Leaf Jamal Mayers and his wife Natalie. They will serve as honourary co-chairs of Aidans Quest Fund. To purchase tickets call Sunseri at 905-951- 0569 or e-mail sunseri@rogers.com. A special task force will be set up this fall to help direct future council decisions on its arenas in Georgetown. Mayor Rick Bonnette received approval from council Monday night to launch the Georgetown Arenas Task Force to be chaired by Ward 2 Councillor Bryan Lewis. Bonnette said the need for a task force arose from several converging factors: the new Recreation Strategic Plan 2006-2016 which recommends an additional 1 to 1.5 more arenas for Georgetown; a 20-year assessment of the aging Memorial Arena which out- lined a financial crippling mainte- nance bill on an annual basis and an increasing demand for more ice time. The mayor pointed out Memorial Arena is in the red by $130,000 annu- ally. There are tremendous costs to Memorial Arena so were going to take a good look at it, he said. The task force will be directed to make recommendations to council by April 30, 2009 on the future of Memorial Arena and on the provision of additional ice surfaces in Georgetown. I see this task force as being the blueprint for the next four to five years, said Bonnette. We dont want any surprises in the future. Lewis told future committee mem- bers to get ready to skate and ensure the process will be open and transpar- ent the public. The task force has been directed to report back to council next month on its Terms of Reference with opportu- nities for future public input. I have documentation from anoth- er community that started something very similar and I believe from the day they started to the day the rink opened was five years. Well probably be more than that but we have to get started, Lewis said. The task force will include two other yet-to-be-named Georgetown council lors, the Towns Chief Administrative Officer Dennis Perlin, Director of Parks and Recreation Terry Alyman and key arena users and residents-at-large in the community.
