All our love and congratulations Mum, Dad, Stephanie, Dan & Kate Nobody likes to get a traffic ticket. While there are literally hundreds of traffic-related offences, here are some of the best ways to ensure being charged (in no particular order): 1. Speeding. Speed once and a driver might get away with it. Speed constantly and its only a matter of time before the police catch you. 2. Stop signs. A stop sign means a driver has to stop. Its not a slow down sign, or an almost stop sign. Stop means stop, period. 3. Seatbelts. To borrow from an American seatbelt campaign, Click it or ticket. Having had the unfortu- nate experience of seeing unbelted people ejected through windshields, the ticket is the least of a drivers worries. It only takes a second to put on and it saves lives. 4. Expired or improper plates. Every vehicle must conspicuously display both a front and rear licence plate (and no, leaving one on the dashboard doesnt cut it). This means that the plates must also be visible, not obscured by dark covers, frames or covered with mud/snow or rusted to the point of being illegible. The plates need to be registered to the vehicle they are on and the sticker must be current. Letting your sticker expire will cost you $110 on top of the new one youll have to purchase. 5. Documents. Every person driv- ing a car needs to carry their drivers licence with them. They also need to carry proof of valid insurance (that little pink slip they send in the mail) and their vehicle registration. True copies of the insurance and registra- tion (both sides) are also acceptable. 6. Causing a collision. If everyone followed all the rules of the road at all times, there would be no colli- sions. If a driver is deemed to be the cause of a collision, they can expect to be charged accordingly. 7. Fail to report a collision. If a driver is involved in a collision where the damage appears to be in excess of $1,000 (as most are), they must report the accident forthwith to the nearest police officer. Coming into the station three weeks later is simply not in compliance with the law. Involved drivers must also provide to any involved person, driver or wit- ness the following information: his or her name, address, drivers licence number and jurisdiction of issuance, insurance policy number, the name and address of the registered owner of the vehicle and the vehicle licence plate number 8. No insurance. Insurance is expensive but driving without a valid policy is even more costly a $5,000 fine for a first no insurance offence. 9. Careless driving. Careless driv- ing is defined as driving without due care and attention or without reason- able consideration for other persons using the highway. Admittedly, this very broad definition can be applied to a variety of driving behaviours those who talk on the cell phone, text message and eat when driving, take note. 10. Turn signals . Last but not least... If a driver turning at an inter- section, entering a roadway or chang- ing lanes affects another road user, then they must signal their move- ment. Failure to properly signal will cost a driver $110 and two demerit points. Bonus round Unnecessary noise. If other drivers can hear the thump thump of your stereo or the roar of your specialized muffler four lanes over and 10 cars back, consider it unnecessary. A $110 dollar fine (each time). Sgt.
