Several local-area athletes scooped up medals at the regional meet. Photo by Liesa Kortmann The Stingers from Stewarttown Sebior Public School were in full flight at last weeks Amos Halton regional cross- country running championships in Burlington, earning two team titles and runner-up honours in two others. The junior and intermediate boys from Stewarttown took top spot in their respective divisions at the 2008 Halton District School Board meet, which drew over 2,000 athletes from grades 3-8. Three Stingers-Hayleigh Bell (inter- mediate girls), Matt Knebel (junior boys) and Bryan Bartle (intermediate boys) finished first individually in their senior-level races that had close to 150 runners in each field. A couple of Pineview students, Mason Lebel (atom boys) and Sam Gats (ban- tam boys), were winners in their events. The 20-year-old from Brampton scored twice in the third period to break up a 4-4 tie with the Mississauga Chargers and sent the visiting Raiders on to their 13th con- secutive Ontario Junior Hockey League win by a 7-4 margin. Branning also had two assists and is one of seven Raiders who has averaged at least a point a game during their 14-2-0 start, with seven goals and 13 helpers. The victory also maintained Georgetowns rep- utation as road warriors in 2008-09, hav- ing won all 10 away games so far. And with Branning sporting a raspber- ry-coloured welt under his mouth after Saturdays game in Port Credit, he could serve as the poster boy for the Raiders success, which now has them ranked 10th among CJAHL clubs. I took a hard shot off the glass in the face and it threw me off for a bit, the 5- foot-11, 195-pound Branning said. A couple of my teeth are a little loose, but I stayed in there and it worked out in the end. Georgetown remains in first place in the MacKinnon Division, six points ahead of Oakville and Burlington. Being a first place team means that everybody wants to take us out, Branning added. Thats our 13th in a row and the next team is probably already itching to stop us. I guess we were thinking we were just going to roll over (the Chargers) and it was a bit of a wakeup call in the third period. After pounding the last-place Chargers 12-1 in their previous visit to Mississauga last month, the Raiders twice gave up leads Saturday and looked like a different team than the one that skated past the IceHawks in Milton 4-1 on Friday night. I suppose you can say that things are going well because even when our guys came out against Mississauga with a stinker, they still found a way to get it done, said Georgetown head coach and general manager James Richmond. We played poorly in our own end and didnt give (goalie) Kevin Campbell any help. In the third period we turned it on and started skating and moving the puck Errant puck cant slow sniper Branning Raiders streak hits lucky No. 13 Georgetown Raiders centre Andrew Marcoux fends of f a couple of Mississauga Chargers during their OJHL contest in Port Credit Saturday night.
