Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, October 22, 2008 5 Most Cogeco customers in Georgetown were with- out cable television, phone and Internet service for several hours Sunday after someone cut and removed 100 metres of fibre optic cable on 17 Sideroad, east of Fourth Line, around 4:30 a.m. Sunday. The overhead cable was strung between two poles. Maureen Tilson Dyment of Cogeco said it took sev- eral hours for the cable to be replaced. It is a challenging job because there can be up to 90 fibre strands in a cable, said Tilson Dyment. She said service for some customers was restored by 3 p.m., the majority had their cable service back by 5 p.m., and all service was restored by 6:30 p.m. Tilson Dyment called the incident puzzling, adding Cogeco had never experienced a situation where someone had climbed a pole to remove cable. This isnt a salvageable cable. There is no copper in it all, stressed Tilson Dyment. If people are climb- ing poles they have to be very careful in that regard. We do power our equipment.
