Enjoy tour of Free Press Robert Little School Acton Ontano March 1970 Dear Mr Coles Thank you for letting us visit the Acton Free Press We enjoyed watching Mrs Ryder use the linotype machine It was a pleasure to sec the newspaper being printed folded cut and put into bundles of Our class enjoyed seeing what work is done in the darkroom We liked the way you pasted the pictures and news with wax Everybody liked to watch the way the envelopes were stamped You should try counting all the machines you have learned many different tilings about the Acton Free Press Your Friends Primary Second Year Room Waste of money filling pot holes J 07 Elizabeth Drive Acton March The Editor Acton Free Press Dear Sir On Friday last week on my way to the post office I and other people in the Bower Avenue area were entertained Unfortunately at the cost of the Acton taxpayer by town workmen making a futile attempt at filling potholes with a cold mix asphalt Now it s bad enough having the pot holes there to begin with but is there any sense in trying to fill a pot hole already half full of water with a cold asphalt mix which will be pushed out at the first freezing As a taxpayer I for one protest this obvious waste of money and waste of the workmen time who must have so many other more important things to attend to I think this an item whih should be discussed at length at the Roads Committee meetings It would also be a good idea to inform the public what the 1970 roads and sidewalk program is as I sincerely hope that the old part of town is not to be fixed up again at the expense of the newer and higher taxed subdivisions Yours truly lain A Williams Mayor of Acton Chairman Roads Committee Acton March 17 Dear Sir I found Peter Mark s recent letter in regard to regional government very fascinating Mr Marks slates in lus letter that proposals as regard Hal ton and Peel arc by no means complete but merely of a primary or tentative nature However it seems that councillor Marks lias swallowed the whole deal hook line and sinker It is obvious Mr has studied Mr white papers which were published a couple of years ago It is unfortunate that he found anything to criticize in view of what has happened to some taxpayer as a direct of some of the decision making at Queen Park I am referring to what is happening to the people of Mississauga who are facing the possibility of losing their homes because of a fantastic increase in assessment An increase can be directly attributed to the fact that the province has taken over the assessment function in Mississauga I shall return to that point later 1 would like to deal with the part of Peter Marks letter which states his opposition to a plebiscite on the question of regional government He seems to think that a price tag of is too high an expenditure for consulting the voters and suggests a detailed questionnaire on regional government take the place of a vote It is my contention it will be very difticult to answer any questionnaire on proposals which arc merely tentative and primary To enter into any decision making even on answering a questionnaire one should understand the implication of the questions I always regarded our politicians as the protectors of then electorate This does not imply a resistance to change but it does give politicians an obligation to be careful in all deals hat he may agree to on behalf of the people It is obvious that McKeough proposals will serve to solve some of Queen s Parks problems however I remain unconvinced that in solving Queen s Parks problems we are also solving Acton problems 1 think our councillors and our mayor should be extremely critical and extremely analytical about Mr proposal rather than hollering Ay Ay sir It would seem dial if all McKeough proposals are accepted most of the smaller towns and communities will lose their planning boards All these many planning boards have over the years required a great deal of knowledge and sophistication in regard to local planning seems to me to be an enormous waste to throw this experience hard won overboard without being sure what we are receiving in its place 1 believe it would be sufficient to pass legislation that would prevent local plans to be at a cross purpose to provincial plans firmly believe that most of the nitty gritty questions such as where a home for the aged or a service station should be placed is better answered by a local board So is the question where industries subdivisions should be placed It is obvious that some planning must take place at a provincial level It would be tragic if a local municipality could prevent good planning for the Niagara escarpment for example 1 would like to draw your attention to what happens when the assessment function is taken over by the province I have personal knowledge of a small plant locked a- short distance outside of Streetsville When area was amalgamated into Mississauga tins plant found its taxes increased from to overnight Mrs finds herself with an increase from to 2 this increase because her property was assessed at although the lady claims she never had any offers of half that price Of course the net effect is hat Mrs will be forced to sell her home because she is a widow and her income is per week On he other hand it is reported that Bell Canada is saving Gulf Oil will pay SI 39 000 less per year and St Lawrence Cement will save 556 Although in many respects our county school board seems to be working well it seems ironic that at a time when the board is giving the student greater freedom they supervise the teachers and principals to a very great extent It seems to me we have a situation where we a men being supervised by a year men being supervised by a year men being old what to supervise by the a year men It seems to me that if wc can grant our students greater autonomy over the learning process surely we can do the same o our highly educated highly paid professional educators It is obvious that we are standing at a crossroad in regard to local government There arc some people who believe the legislation for regional government as Queen s Park sees it has been written and is quite ready be brought before the House The only people who can prevent serious consequences from arising is our municipal politicians It is my hope they will recognize is in the interest of their voters all their voters and that they will act accordingly Certainly it is irresponsible to accept incomplete or tentative proposals merely because they sound pretty good on paper Perhaps our leaden should refuse to let marry Peel The farthest they should go having mind what happened in is a form of trial marriage during which Peel would have an opportunity to straighten her economic fairs In this way the other half be loaded with an unjust debt Yours truly Nielsen The Acton Free Press Wednesday March 18 Esquesing may appoint first finance committee POWER IN THE SIXTH LINE area of was Interrupted for about two hours last Friday when a huge bulldozer slid off a truck rolled down steep embankment and struck a hydro pole The minor accident on Sixth Line just north of Highway The bulldozer was being brought in to help on the reconstruct on of the highway Staff Photo Esquesing council may form a finance committee as a result of a suggestion by deputy reeve Tom Hill at Monday night s regular meeting Council agreed earlier in the meeting to consider at budget time a request for financial aid submitted by Acton Board of Parks and Recreation Committee chairman Peter Marks Mr Marks told council he felt a request for aid was in order since a high percentage of township people use parks and recreational facilities in Acton at no extra charge 1 pretty sure Georgetown is going to be here now and I m sure Milton isn going to let it slide by without some comment deputy reeve Hill predicted I think it s time we had a finance committee on this council he added The deputy reeve said he thought Esquesing was he only municipality in Ontario without a finance committee Reeve George Currie agreed and indicated he may appointed the whole five man council to the finance committee
