By Wendy Thorn wo There I was driving along minding my own business when the truck started falling apart ort of Actually I wasnt even driving along I had hopped into the truck put it in reverse swung around into our Lacking up space then rolled back onto the drive again As soon as the truck hit the gravel there was an awful noise from out the back a clanking and scraping and whatnot Twisted rump It was such a slight one I When I climbed back out I saw thought shed hardly feel It but the scat of son Davids tricycle she stopped dead and looked at lying on the drive right behind me and the handlebars further back The rest was under the truck in a bis twisted mess Thinking that it might let go If dragged on a bit futher I moved on a fot or so It hung on At the time it seemed quite logical that if it hung on going forward It should fall off if I backed up SoK hopped back Into the truck and backed up a couple of feet then went to see what happened It hadnt fallen off but the muffler and tall pipe had Round about then I sent for Gord I suppose If Id called him In the first place the truck would have stayed together but very likely all hed have done was kick the tall pipe and the bicycle would have fallen off in a neat little pile Then would say Cant you do ANYTHING properly As It Is I can say quite smugly that I can bung things up quite properly and thoroughly without even trying There was another example that same evening but with the horses Since it was out time I gave the adult horses their feed in a tub and was leading the twins aside for their ration In separate buckets The colt trotted along quite nicely but my filly foal decided to act up and was putting on quite a show Stops dead I swung the lead rope back and gave her a gentle Up on the OPP column me in amazement A blow I had struck her a blow It was the first ever received and she couldnt get over it Her eyes went big and wide and her lower lip started to tremble I could see the wheels whining around In her head while she tried to figure out what to do and what not to do next Finally she had it all thought out She wasnt going to eat her oats and couldnt make her so THERE And once shed decided she wouldnt change her mind While all the other horses chewed and munched and fought over their oats Sparrow stood with all four feet firmly braced what I dont know as I wasnt holding her and a very aloof and stubborn expression on her face Mom lectures Before too long old mama Slack Velvet was over with a lecture about not letting good food go to waste and cleaned out the pall in nothing flat The last glimpse I had of the filly before I came up to the house she was walking all stiff legged and sulky out to the pasture muttering I didnt want oats really Which all goes to prove that if you get fed up with your car and all the little and big things that go wrong andifyouchuckitandget a horse youll just have problems New constable school in report The Acton Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police worked a total of hours while the cruiser was patrolled miles On the general occurrences agenda seven investigations were conducted Five of the oc currences were of a relatively minor nature and required very little police action The other two were a report of a missing girl who was located by the police and an assault In which a local man was placed under arrest New constable A new face will be seen on patrol in the town Const H BROWN reported for duty at the Acton Detachment on Monday August He will replace Const who reported for duty at the Toronto Detachment I hope you will all show Const Brown the courtesy and the friendliness that small towns are famous for In less than a week the children will be back to school The children who will be going for the first time will be so excited they will forget the safety rules given them by the parents Give these young inexperienced children the same consideration youd show If one of them were your own child Always overtake them cautiously never startle them with a sudden blast of your horn and pass them with plenty of room to spare So please remember your extra care could save a young child from for entries By McNeill Fall fair time is just around the corner and many people will be making entries in the fruit flower and vegetable sections of their local show Exhibiting In these shows involves a lot of preparation or the entries the night before the show but the satisfaction of displaying produce can be extremely gratifying especially if a prize is awarded to the entry Each year though many entries are disqualified because the exhibitor did not take time to thoroughly read the prize list When the prize list calls for five tomatoes or 12 pods of peas the entry will automatically be disqualified by the judge If there ore more or less than this number In the flower section the prize list often calls for six blooms of petunia This means just that six blooms and no buds When a specified number of blooms are called for all buds must be removed All Individual specimens in any entry must be as uniform in size Shape and color as possible They should be fresh clean and pleasing to the eye Medium size specimens should be shown overgrown or very small sizes will be quickly passed over by the Judge The Acton Free Press Wednesday September Rev and Mrs A Mc Ken lie and family
