Lack of funds to renovate signs Dear sir As president of the Acton Chamber of Commerce I noted your editorial remarks concerning the signs leading Into town and must say that the Chamber Is very aware these signs ere In a disgraceful state These signs are the responsibility of the Chamber of Commerce I can only say that there has been a large amount of discussion over the past two years concerning getting either these old signs repainted or the possibility of newly designed signs either of which cost money The real problem Is simply a lack of operating funds The fees that are payable to the Acton Chamber of Commerce by its members are too low and do not allow much room for big expenditures Since the Acton Chamber of Commerce would like to see these signs floodlit we believe it will be necessary to relocate the sign on 2S Highway South We have talked to the other Service clubs as they have always done In the pest We have had an offer by lha Acton Development Commission dated August In which they have offered lo take over these signs Allan Eastwood on behalf of the Chamber has been asked to enlist the help of the High School art students to see If we can get a good practical new design As you can see from the foregoing there really has been a lot of thought as to the direction these signs should take but the real problem Is the fact that well under BO per cent of the merchants In thin Immediate area who should be supporting the Chamber are not doing so There are two ways that we can Increase our revenue either Increase membership dues or got many new members Action will shortly be taken and at that time you will be notified Protests costs of sewage water systems Dear Sir Here without further comment Is a copy of a loiter which 1 hove sent to the clerk of Township re the proposed Rock wood Water Sewer scheme Yours very truly J S McKenna Harris St Mr T Hindley Township of RR Rockwood Re proposed water and Sewage Systems for the Village of Rockwood Regarding the above subject there are several comments I would like to make and questions I would like to ask as follows 1 As a taxpayer of the village Iwlshto protest the cost In terms of additional taxes of this scheme In the first place the figures quoted In the local press and elsewhere are misleading They give frontage charges etc for a foot lot The great majority of lots In the village have much greater frontage than this While the published figures are high enough the cost for a lot of foot frontage or more Is exorbitant These additional taxes will surely cause great hardship to many people in the village and I am of the opinion that the village as a whole cannot afford this scheme as proposed at this time 2 Regarding the proposal to carry the effluent to the river below the Conservation Area this Is surely a blatant waste of money If tho proposed plant isaa efficient as the engineers have stated why Is it necessary to do this What possible objection can there be to placing outlet Just below the first falls at the mill If the plant Is not that efficient why waste money Installing It In tho first place What Is the actual estimate of the additional cost of conveying the sewage system below the Conservation Area Why have we heard at different times figures ranging from all the way to over f200 for this part of the work Does anyone know what It will cost Why has more factual Information not been made available We have been told that In 1966 a certain number of wells were found to be un satisfactory or polluted but no one seems to be able to find out if these were concentrated In certain areas of the village or what type of contamination they suffered We would like to know We have been told that plans reports and estimates would be available for Inspection at the township offices A number of people have asked to see these documents without success Why Is such secrecy necessary Is there any guarantee that If and when the systems are installed the village would not become a developers paradise for a few years and expand so rapidly that the systems would be loaded over and beyond their capacity making further costly ex pension of the equipment necessary I am sure the people of the village with the possible exception of a few business people would derive no benefit from such expansion and the essential character of the village would undoubtedly suffer I trust that the comments In this letter will be conveyed lo the Ontario Municipal Board THE PILL The worst kind of reducing pill Is the one who keeps on telling you how he
