delightful years spent in Eden Mills Miss Barrow is writing the scries to show her appreciation to residents of the village Eden Mills Ont August Dearest May- Its been a gorgeous day now Im sitting outside while I rest and write to you I cant remember If I told you that because of the slope of the hill the ground has been levelled and terraced The house is built right Into the side of the hill the back cant be more than six inches off the ground And at the some level where Im sitting there are about a dozen dwarf fruit trees It looks as If I shall get some apples In a few weeks the trees are young and not all have started bearing Eight hours work Well was I ever tired last Sunday I hooked up that electric lawn mower Dad gave to get the grass cut When the house was rewired last month 1 had them put several plugs in strategic places outside so I could use it because It Is so light Even so with all these terraces and bonks it took me eight hours to cut it Ill Just have to get a boy to do It for me even tho the cost will be fantastic Friend nearby You oak me if I have any friends In the district Yes for tunately for Elizabeth whom I knew before her marriage lives about three miles away Her husband Bill is in the sheepfarming business They live In a lovely old stone house one with a most pleasing pitch to the roof Theres a huge old elm In front so they call it Elm Tree Farm of a rainy damp day were transformed into a seasonal autumn one adding much to the exhilarating success of the St Johns Church October Blast held last Saturday In the Parish Hall For one afternoon the ecclesiastical church grounds took on a mood of frivolity as outdoor pony rides and bar becued were to be purchased on the church grounds Kalhy Woodward with assistants Dean Ingle and Sandy Boot and other parish young people directed ponies horses around the encompassed ring and John Clark and Monty Root donned chef for the occasion as their outdoor tent cafe proved a worthwhile en deavour with a future potential Decorations The light easy and friendly atmosphere the hall en couraged many young people to congregate and enjoy themselves and this was greatly due to the earlier decorating preparations of many of the church young people including and Nancy Ingle Sandy Cheryl McMinn John Clark and also Knthy Woodward who prepared seasonal coloured construction paper leaves arranged them In windy blasts about the parish hall walls Paul Clark and Kevin Root logmen for the hamburger tent while assisted in various booths Baking efforts was great and many members of the or regal ion worked together to build towards the affairs success Mrs Dorothy Dean assisted by her two daughters Florence and Phyllis Ingle all of Harris Street mode a suc cess of their baking table which at the beginning of the afternoon was laden low with home baking Their committee netted fair profits for tremendous efforts Boutique area Ingle headed up the Jewellery counter and Betty 1 was in charge of the boutique depart ment for which many stylish vests and special articles dart had been created with appeal for Acton Free Pre duosdny October 1970 AS USUAL PONY rides were the hit of the day with small try on Saturday afternoon in but the St Johns Church October Blast also featured horses which were an added attraction for teenagers Photo by Lorraine the teenagers as well as adults with Bettys own special designing abilities showing in many areas of that centre Hazel Hamilton and her two daughters Dale and Iols worked together with Audrey Hudson on the tea table Sandy Hudson organized ran the skate exchange Flossie and Betty Iou Clark were in charge of the rummage sale and Christmas bargains were sold with Mrs Sally behind the counter One Innovation Included the spontaneous rolk western songs of Miss Muriel Holmes of Acton for the added entertainment of coffee customers which in a very small way resembled York- type tea house with a continuous number of young people wandering about BcouUful candles hand made by Don Griffin with dyed maple leaf designs and of various colors and shapes added to the many attractive purchases to be made in the lines of unique sale Items and sorts of pictures done on tiles She even decorates those porcelain switch plates and has given me one for my living room It makes a lovely little flower picture so much more decorative than those plain old bakellte ones Owl for TV I have bought one with a little owl on it which Is just right for the TV room I hove the old couch in there and a good reading lamp and because of my propensity for reading till all hours Ive no doubt the room will be dubbed the Owls Nest BUI Hoey took me to church the other Sunday Because I dont know him very well and hes ex- Navy I was a bit scared of koeplng him waiting so was down at the road in plenty of time He had had to get gas so they were singing the first hymn when we arrived Sing lustily It was one we both knew and Joined in lustily turning the page for the last verse to our horror and amusement we were the only ones singing We hadnt had time of course to read the leaflet beforehand or wed have known We had a good laugh about it when I went down to their place for supper There are quite a number of children all of about the same age around here and weve had a running gun battle going on all up and down the slopes all afternoon but I notice they are all very careful to avoid the flower beds They cool off in the mill pond What a nice place for children to grow up Most of them go by bright yellow school bus to the school just beyond the village I understand the older ones have to go further afield to Guelph or Acton Made some jam yesterday This year I just put lemon with the peaches and is it ever good Set All for now Love Val WE
