quirements Not responsible for accidents By Rev A Walter Churchill Community Church These lints are being written In a convalescent hospital room in the City of Toronto by one who has been incarcerated in hospital since September of this year During that he has undergone a complete hip operation six days after which he was on his feet learning to walk again Three weeks after the operation no well on the way to having relearned the art of walking naturally It Is hardly necessary to say that during the days spent in hospital much has passed through the writers mind things such as the matter of possible death and the success or failure of the operation which was performed on a highly infectious area There was however no thought of ear re the future and there were several reasons for this One of these was that folk of varied denominational persuasions and some of no church affiliation at all were of fering prayers on his behalf Another reason was the realization that he was under the care of several of Torontos ablest and most dedicated physicians The surgeon who performed the operation Dr Thomas made one remark previous to that operation which lifted the spirits of his to the realm of steady faith and assurance He said We surgeons do not play God but we work with Him This coming from a comparatively young man Immediately endeared the writer to him Looking over life at large I have been so often impressed by the dedication of some folk to their lifes work Their work Is to them not Just a job it Is a profession or calling To it they give themselves with superb dedication This la their beall and end- like the young university graduate who complained to general manager that he was not being given enough to challenge his and talents and that he was tired of just putting In time So many are quite prepared to loaf In all the time they can and arc forever griping about the poor pay they receive In the ranks of hospital workers as elsewhere In the world of workers I have learned that there are three main groups There are those who like the doctors I have mentioned arc dedicated to their tasks These tasks ore associated with a calling They arc faced In the spirit of service of doing what good I can do to the best of my ability These are to be found among the lowly orderlies well as among the doctors and surgeons One orderly whom we affectionately called Mike said to me the first night was a patient In the orthopedic ward If there Is anyway I can be of help to you sir let me know He spoke with a pronounced central European accent Among these orderlies the colored personnel were the most courteous and helpful A second group of workers among the employees as elsewhere in the labor force may be labelled the dutydoers These stick to the letter of the law and woebetide the patient who does not toe the line or keep within the bounds of the recognized rulings With these folk all must more or less follow the some regulations no matter what the physical condition of the patient may be If the directions indicate he Is to tie himself up like a human pretzel In spite of the fact that he Is stif fened by arthritis then he must do It There are the sergeantmajors among senior nurses too Fortunately the patient can always appeal to his doctor and get such orders changed A third group of hospital workers are those who quite clearly are not possessed of the idea that their work Is anything but a Job So the thing to do is put In all the timo you can and do as little as possible Why run yourself ragged for that old guy who might as well be dead anyway I personally fail to understand how anyone who Is trained as a nurse can ever carry on as such lacking the desire to help the patient to the utmost and having little of the milk of human kindness in her nature Most nurses do their best for their patients Especially Is this true of the younger followers of the lady of the lamp All who are called to serve any capacity as doctors nurses orderlies physiotherapists or what have you should recognize that this fa a calling a calling In the ministry of helpfulness But then every line of work engaged In by the professing Christian should be considered by him as a calling and not as just a job DONT MISS the ads this week Theyre full of bargains and voting suggestions DENTAL DR LEONARD Dental Surgeon Suite No 3 Mill St
