application of your brakes should be followed im mediately by a glance in the rear- view mirror The danger from behind may be greater than the danger ahead warns the Ontario Safety League OUR READERS WRITE Teach religion on separate basis 2 Dear Sir I have noticed with interest the many letters in your columns regarding demands for financial assistance for various schools of different religious teachings Whilst 1 am inclined to agree that there is some substance to the requirements asked for I wonder at the same time how all these needs are to be met with taxation as high as it is I am far from being against religious teaching In the schools but am of the opinion that this is a sphere where the churches which seem to be suffering a slump In congregations could do a good Job of work in this direction Education Is a full time vocation and whilst as I think religious teaching is morally very good I would like to see kept as a separate entity as far as- teaching is concerned School today is a vast complex area of teaching and I personally believe that religious teaching would be far more beneficial to all If kept as a separate operation for you will always have scholars who dont want religious education and that itself creatcso problem where freedom of studies exists These are solely my views and would finallv remind all these that Canada is going through a very serious economic crisis the peak of which has not been reached I think all these financial demands should be put aside for the being Lets get the country on a sound basis before even considering separate needs Yours truly Andrew E Welch Must stand up to lifes war Sir have just been reading your high school students opinions of Day and was surprised that they did not seem to realize that war has a cause It is awful but in some cases necessary I do not for one minute think that our Creator intended us to be trampled underfoot as would have been the case If Germanys Hitler had had his way Who stopped him Those brave men whom we honored on Remembrance Day Dont forget boys mis country you live in peacefully now had to be protected long ago on the border Settlers as well as soldiers were forced to fight to save their and yours for your Canada of today Why did Laura Secord walk miles In the woods Why did Brock and Wolfe give their lives To save this country for you and And why did Mr bring on the War Measures Act Because there was no other way to stop the brutality that is taking place in our own country Just a few miles away Ralph Connors book Glengarry School Days which read some years ago tells of pioneer days in Ontario A man teacher in a one roomed school was being annoyed by some mischievous boys big or over Something had to be done His side of the school war had to be fought These were his words In essence You black Johns Andrew and Red Bills Thomas come up here or Ill smash every MacDonald Yes from school days onward we must stand up to lifes war Yours truly
