division of Canada Varnish who manufacture products for electrical manufacturers One of the problems as president Chamber of Commerce this past year has been a lack of communication and factual Information on decisions taken by council Although I will no longer be president of the Chamber of Commerce certainly as a council member I con make sure that this important body has a better liaison with council My personal reasons for running for council are a more or less total dissatisfaction with councils work over the past two years The most Important areas 1 can cover are to push for more industries In town When I soy industries I dont mean a two or three man operation What we need are new industries locating that will employ lets say for arguments sake 30 to 40 people to start 1 let my name stand for parks board earlier this year but decided to withdraw it due to it becoming obvious that the council did not want anything to do with me because I suspect of my outspoken criticism Your support will be appreciated and your vote will count towards a better local government JACK GREER Jack Greer came to Acton from in 1929 and has been with his wife Kate and two daughters Hes an injection moulder at Building Products of Canada and is president of union local United Rubber Workers He is a member of the Mens club I think the people of Acton are anxious to see some changes in municipal administration Mr Elliott says It Is evident that there is growing concern about lack of progress In many areas where there are recognized community needs such as the longdelayed senior citizens project local Improvements and industrial development Perhaps these problems would receive more Immediate attention with some new faces on council rising to the position of that without foreman in 1930 to full foreman some active effort my concern In and has held this position would provide no positive results since that date He married an I have decided to try to be one of Acton girl and they raised three those new faces children a daughter Joyce Mrs A Akitt of Burlington two WfflJnmc sons James and William both miliums married and living in B C nut wmunK was member being a plant recommendations are in process to update our police department and our fire department as one we can all look upon with pride Our sidewalk program Is going ahead as scheduled with five parts Acton Blvd Mill St Wallace Ave Mil St south to Camerson from Main St north In Elizabeth Dr west The three arc now completed I was appointed to the industrial development commission In I960 and as you are aware the town purchased acres In and until 1968 It sat practically dormant I have worked hard with the commission to get this investment Into an asset Instead of a deficit and I am proud to say it Is now on the move with the sale of land to the amount of and if elected again I promise to work just as hard and feel quite confident that our industrial park will be showing quite a sizable profit In the next two years 1 have proven by my actions that am not only community recreational and industry minded I also like to see progress In all departments but always with a close eye on a feasible budget and for these reasons I ask for your support to carry on as a councillor for your best interests Marks Chairman of the hydro commission for the past two years McEachem has been on the REDUCED Sprue up your home at unbelievable prices -FEATURING- Urine Room Dining Room Bedroom Suites Occasional Chairs Tables Mirrors Lamps Footstools Pictures and a host of other items robert Gougeon HOUSEHOLD FURNISHING He is keen on getting new Industry and would to si town to insure that the youth of our town can afford to use these facilities and if this means subsidizing ice time then we must try to find some means of doing this A successful town should have around Acton to supply the much- a good source of employment for needed jobs to our present and the population adequate housing future population I cannot see and recreational facilities Wo see the that this would be anything but are at present falling behind in all senior citizens housing proceed good In the first Instance It threeoreaslfelectedtocounclll In the field of recreation he would would be a source of increased pledge my constant support at like to see the emphasis off drugs taxes into the town purse it every opportunity to the and bock on sports He feels the would benefit our mcrchanta and improvement of these basic but taxes should stay where they ore last but most Important It very Important Issues unless an increase absolutely would improve the standard of necessary vlng of a great many people if Acton Is to change let us it changes for Actonians and that EARL are what we deserve When regional government takes Mr and Mrs Earl live place we wilf have lost the on Jeffrey Ave and have three intimacy and personal contact children Hes a saleman In which we now have available to us through our mayor reeve and He has been five years on councillors council serving on every Our Arena has been the centre committee has been on parks much discussion and concern board and planning board He is a during the past few months past president of the Men When I came to this town I was As chairman of the public most Impressed to find our works committee he would Community Centre with the lake particularly like to see the and parkland so attractively present road program alongside We ore indeed completed and to plan and to have this but we engineer for the two future years must jealously guard and protect He says would like Acton to it It we dont get the necessary keep on a balanced residential improvements to make the Arena commercial and Industrial a comfortable and safe place now It is mv opinion that we will stand little chance of achieving It in the future when we compete against larger townships In regional government 1 would like to see the arena program and various types of housing are needed to meet the dilfcrent needs of the people of Acton As a member of the planning board would like continuing effort made toward not only repaired but much Joint planning with the neigh- improved It Is also in my opinion boring townships very sound investment for the You have to have an ac ceptable tax rate yet It has to be sufficient for your budgets to be workable Eastwood ELIZABETH EASTWOOD Mr and Mrs Eastwood live on Elmore Dr with daughter Hazel who attends teachers college and two young sons Mr Eastwood Is head of the science department at Acton high school Mrs Eastwood was born in Scotland lived and worked In in England before they came to Canada in They have lived 18 months In Acton Since regional government is inevitable It Is my opinion that we should face this squarely and find out what we have to gain or lose when the time for amalgamation arrives As a small town of long standing Acton could well become the dormitory town of the area It seems that we have been small and quiet and while this situation holds many charms for some it means hardship and a mere existence for a great many A dormitory town would not tor example want too much industry yet at present the majority of our community are working class people seeking employment This means travelling sometimes a great distance to find work and as we all know this Is not only time- consuming and exhausting It Is also expensive It is therefore my desire to see more industry located in and Coats BILL COATS Councillor Bill Coats Uvea with his wife and four children on Young St Hes a high school teacher active In the United Church States Bill Coats- have enjoyed my last two years on the council of the Town of Acton Mr Coats comments It has taken almost all that time to learn and have an understanding of the complexities of municipal government Local governments have both their strength and weakness Their strength comes from the close contact with the voters and the opportunity to work on behalf those who arc your neighbors weakness comes from the control superimposed from above by the provincial government If reelected to the council 1 would work in the direction of overcoming some of the weakness that has become apparent to me over the last two years I could sum it up In one word planning We are a small town relatively speaking compared to other municipalities that surround us and we cannot employ full time consultants in planning and engineering We must make more use of our part tune consultants and plan ahead so we can present to the provincial government well thought out projects to keep Acton abreast of the times We need planning with regard to our housing needs to our storm sewer system to systematic and regular street repairs to our industrial park to our parks program and its development for the future and to the expansion of the existing boundaries of Acton One other Item of planning comes to mind and for this one we do not need the consent of the provincial government We must begin Immediately with plans for Actons birthday which is Just two years away in Centennial celebrations dont just happen The cooperation of all organizations and groups in town will be required and the council must take a leading role I would also like to see a history of the town of Acton written and necessary this should be subsidized by the town In this and age of rapidly expanding technology and population explosion the only way that Acton can grow and yet remain the kind of town we all love so well is by intelligent knowledgeable and efficient planning This should be the task council for the next few years and if reelected I will constantly keep the concept of a planned future In front of your local government
