that dearly purchased privilege of free men Everyone wonders about the outcome of the vote In Acton and surrounding municipalities Will there be upsets Will there be runaway victories I can only guess like yourself about the actual personnel of our new council But we can be reasonably sure It will be a good hard working and progressive council for there has been a fine group of candidates In the running We are fortunate in this community that so many people who hove proved beyond much disputing through their active participation in public life and the organizations of our town their deep concern for the progressive development of this area and are seeking the opportunity to guide our affairs None of them surely is unaware that there are many complex problems requiring both study and action that a member of council is seldom properly thanked for his long and arduous labours by his fellow citizens and that the best satisfaction he may hope for Is the knowledge in the depths of his being that he has given the best of himself for the welfare of the majority It seems to me that a primary requisite in any candidate for office in government whether on the municipal provincial or federal level Is that he should be a person of genuine and Incorruptible integrity The exercise of power even the authority of a municipal politician puts to a test the integrity of the Individual I would remind you of the old and fairly true statement that Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely So look well to yourselves successful votegetters whoever you are Those who voted you Into office today will be watching to see whether you will exercise the power you have been given for the long range good of all and not primarily for the good of a minority or for the exaltation of yourself Changes in life styles and the growing complexity of our urban civilization are putting severestralns on old fashioned ways of doing this Job of governing Unless municipal councils are very alert and keep pace with the rapidity of change they will become the best argument for scrapping the present structures of government and replacing it with something better One thing I hope all of us in this community will never fail to strive for and that Is genuine community living The large centres of population have lost this and many people who have never lived in towns such as Acton simply do not know what community living lit i good life Let us be thankful us participate In It with real enthusiasm let us tell others how good life Is in this place and finally councillor or citizen let us put forth our best efforts to make our common life better A beautiful gift for Mfltlwr or member of lie IM from ftBwd 9S To the Electors of Esquesing Township A Sincere Thank You To All Who
