Icicles named choir contest winners By Gary Armstrong College News Service Christmas means more to the Asian Christians than to some Canadians say Robert moderator of the United Church of Canada has spent most of his life working as a surgeon in Asia and the outspoken church leader explains why Christmas can be more lnportont to an Asian Christian We have to make a place for Christmas because there Is so much going on all the time But to the Asian Christian it Is a major event because his life Is very boring punctuated only by the seasons In India Christians are very poor and a minority group To celebrate Christmas they have to save for months Big celebration When Christmas comes however they hold their big celebration the year they observe the birth of Christ and invite their twinkling lights on trees aglow No Christmas bells were chimed But in the sky there was a Star That guided Wise Men from afar And shepherd knelt beside the hay Where the Christ of Christmas lay How different was His lowly birth On that first Christmas night There was no dainty cradle bed No fleecy blankets blue or white No pillow for His head But round Him shone a Halo bright That filled the place with wondrous light Bright as the Star that led the way Where the Christ of Christmas lay How different were the tidings That announced His royal birth Angels sang the message sweet Of Peace goodwill to Earth While shepherds watched their sheep Gods glory lit up all the plain And Heaven echoed the refrain With angel hosts that Christmas day Over the place where Jesus lay How different were the gifts they brought To celebrate His birth Myrrh and frankincense and gold And gifts of precious worth They worshipped Him were told We may not give such presents rare But in their homage we may share By bringing our hearts and lives to lay At the fee t of the Christ of Christmas day How different Is the Christmastlde With Christ enthroned within There Is no striving or unrest No weight of guilt or sin For the Prince of Peace Is our Christinas guest He Who from Heavens glory came To redeem a people for His name Be born In hearts again we pray 0 lovely Christ of Christmas day By Mrs Vivian Wiggins Troy Victoria Ave Hamilton Ont Submitted by her sister Mrs B Barrick Port Colborne Thorn tree blossoms Every Christmas the phenomenon of the blossoming Holy Thorn Tree occurs In England and Washington DC on Dec a tree called the Holy Thorn or Glastonbury Thorn blooms In the ancient English town of Glastonbury Sometime during the same month an offshoot of the same tree bursts into bloom in Washingtons Cathedral of the Close According to legend two days before Christmas years after the birth of Christ St Joseph of Glastonbury carrying with him the Holy Grail used at the Last Supper While pausing to rest at the top of a hill overlooking the town he drove his staff in the ground where it immediately took root The Christmas Eve It had turned into a thorn tree cohered with blossoms bars them One Christmas that reveals the importance of the holiday to the Asians occurred in Hong Kong In 1956 Europeans were asked to stay away from the Christmas Eve service at the church nearest to the border of Communist China On Dec McCIure found out why A large number of Chinese had come through a tunnel underneath the electrified barbed wire fence and risked Communist machine guns to have Christmas with their Christian neighbors at the church It is because there might have been informers that they asked for us to stay away If any Chinese had a meal with a white man they certainly would have been shot by the Communists explained objects to the attitude of many Canadians In celebrating Christmas Christ eliminated Christ has almost been eliminated from our Christmas Weve got Santa Claus and commercialism Its very hard to think of the birth of Christ when opening Christmas presents he said Dr McCIure suggested that we celebrate Christmas as It was done years ago in England using Boxing Day for giftgiving We have to polarize Christmas We should have one day of celebration and one day of religious observance he said Dr does not advocate a Puritan Christmas One his most memorable Chrlstmases was also one of the most unorthodox It was the Christmas of 1931 in China McCIure had turned over the Christmas celebrations to the local Chinese church A few days before Christmas one of the Chinese asked for Dr Delco generator Later the electric fans of the hospital were also borrowed Special Christmas On Christmas day we went Into the church and here the church decoration was a huge wheel he recalls Dangling from the wheel were pictures of the Madonna babies angels camels the Wise Men and a couple of King During the opening prayer we heard the start up There was a rustling upstairs the church was packed with kids and suddenly the wheel started gyrating We realized that they had belted up the wheel to the electric fans The prayer Just tapered off and there was a loud cheer from the audience to watc he camels chasing the Madonna and Herod chasing the angels That was a merry Christmas The Christmas Angels boys from Grade 12 won first prize in
