Andrew McKenzic Knox Church Acton OUR UNITY IN CHRIST MUST BE SEEN AND KNOWN It is early Sunday afternoon and I write this as I look out the window of my room In the Holiday Inn on Sherbrooke Street near the centre of the agitated city of Montreal I am midway In a tenday refresher course for Presbyterian ministers from all parts of Canada at Presbyterian College The temptation Is to contrast the symbols of mans achievement In this city as I view Place Vllle Marie and the other tall buildings which represent the excellence of mans architectural and engineering genius towering before my eyes with the sorrowful divisions which have been on embarrassment to nearly every citizen of this giant metropolis particularly In recent months However my thoughts at this hour are related to another not primarily political or social but religious and spiritual a dlvldedness which to a considerable degree does carry over Into the sociopolitical scene I refer to the so apparent and evident to every citizen of some communities and certainly to be found in too large a measure In our own beloved community of Acton Protestants and Catholics while seemingly friendly and cordial to one another and concerned about each other s welfare are actually not as closely linked in the service and mission of Christ as we should be We have not acknowledged as strenuously and eagerly as wo should have done that our common unity In Christ Is demonstrated before the eyes of the world by our worshipping and working together for His Kingdom We have chosen to Ignore the deep motive for Christian unity found in Jesus high priestly prayer In John 17 20 when He said Neither pray I for these alone but for them also which shall believe on me through their word that they all may be one as those Father art In me and I In thee that they also may be one In us that the world may believe that thou hast sent me Notice that the reason we should overcome our lamentable divisions Is to demonstrate convincingly to all our community indeed to the whole of mankind the oneness of God the Father and God the Son who are worshipped and adored presumably by both Protestants and Catholics In other words the unity of the eternal God Is proclaimed when we show our basic unity In Christ and It is also seriously called In question If not denied by our evident division and divisive spirit During four days of the past week I sat with If Presbyterian ministers for a series of eight onehour lectures on Ecumenism given by Father and his assistant Father Stephane Vallquette of the National Office of Ecumenism located here In Montreal with whom were associated four Jesuit Professors who teach In the seminaries of Montreal and Quebec City All six men are deeply Imbued with the ecumenical spirit and at least two of them were working hard for closer relations between Catholics Protestants Orthodox and Anglicans even before the Roman Catholic Church took an official position favoring ecumenical action and practice at the Vatican Council in the past decade These men conscious of the great which have separated Christians both laity and clergy for long centuries arc taking ecumenicity seriously and are Joyfully doubling their efforts to develop that dialogue and coming together In Christian love and divine grace of all persons who love the Lord Jesus Christ and want to see His will carried out in the lives of men It was touching and deeply moving when at the conclusion of the lectures Father Beaublen led us all In prayer and earnestly Invoked Gods grace and aid to all of us Presbyterians and Catholics and others to demonstrate to all around our common love and loyalty to the only Saviour of the world Jesus Christ It was touching because even ten years ago we could not have discussed with genuine openness our differences and our problems in fulfilling Christ mission now we can not only talk about these things but we can openly pray with each other and for each other If these men far more conscious than we can be of the reasons for division and the arguments for can bridge the chasms historically presented by our varying traditions how much easier It should be far us who are helped by the same uniting Spirit of Christ to give to our fellow human beings a demonstration of the oneness we experience In the dlsciplcship of Jesus Christ The annual meeting of the congregation of Trinity
